It was really a treat for me to be there.? Had Richard not had the accident involving his finger and the show gone forward a few weeks earlier as scheduled, I would have been home on the west coast and missed the show.? So in some strange way, Richard's misfortune became my fortune :-) Anyway... as Richard was telling the story of his unfortunate encounter with an axe,?sparing us the gruesome details, but giving us just enough to let?us know what a profound impact this "accident" has had on his life and his ability to play guitar ...?he suddenly got a far-away look in his eyes as he was gazing?into the upper right corner of the room...??remembering in his minds-eye the day of chopping wood. And he pauses.? Then says, slowly, and so eloquently... "And I really enjoyed chopping wood." And in that moment, I saw another side of Richard.? One that could be just as content out in the back-lands of Argentina simply chopping wood. And a man who felt equally a sense of loss in the inability to (currently)? chop wood as in the loss of being able to play his guitar in the way he was accustomed to. It was a beautiful Zen-like moment. Chop wood,?carry water. I love Richard.? He is as much a great teacher and story-teller as he is a fabulous musician.
