I was also there yesterday but didn't hear the message in the same way. Just that he needed surgery on his finger and that he would not be there. I couldn't help wondering why someone who depends on their hands for their livelihood would put them in such jeopardy. Plus how the heck do you hit your finger with an ax? Granted I know nothing about axes but every time I've seen someone with an ax (scary movies) they're usually holding it with both hands. I don't mean to make light of things. I feel really bad for him and hope that he recovers quickly and fully. sending good thoughts to Buenos Aires, Janet - --- On Sat, 7/5/08, Jean Rossner wrote: > From: Jean Rossner > Subject: Re: [RS] First Cut is the deepest... > To: shindell-list@smoe.org > Date: Saturday, July 5, 2008, 11:05 PM > In case anybody's wondering, Richard did NOT appear as > scheduled at > the New Bedford Summerfest. Well I expect he went to the Dr right away. Hopefully he didn't try to Dr. himself and then discover it was worse than he thought. Is he in the states or in BA I wonder?? Does BA have good plastic surgeons? What would an axe be used for other than chopping down a tree or splitting wood? I thought he lived in an apt in BA. Maybe he is is the US and was helping Hazel with chores or something. Maybe it was a hatchet and not an axe. Anyway let's hope the surgery was precautionary at worst. From his website: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ As many of you will have heard by now, I've had a little accident involving an axe and my left index finger. To all of you who have sent notes wishing me a speedy recovery, I thank you. It means a lot. First, the current status of upcoming shows. > July 6 (Watercolor Cafe, Larchmont NY): moved to July 20. > July 10 (Black Potatoe Music Festival, Clinton, NJ): I'm not going to make it. > July 11 (Jonathan's Restaurant, Ogunquit, ME): this show has been cancelled, although we are exploring the possibility of rescheduling for early August. > July 13 (Club Helsinki, Great Barrington, MA): cancelled. Stay tuned for more updates. Now, without going into any of the gruesome details, I feel I should counter any rumor inflation that might be floating around out there. The damage, which is limited to that one finger, did not involve any muscles or tendons. So there's no danger of losing mobility. The other piece of good news is that the end of the finger should regenerate to a good extent. 1/8 inch further to the left and I would've been in serious trouble. As it is, it will heal. The final product is not going to be a pretty sight, but I console myself by imagining all the fun I'll have someday, regaling the grandchildren with stories of how it happened: a knife fight in a bar Manila, a duel in a castle in Leipzig, a drunken knife thrower at the circus, a pirate initiation rite - anything but the truth, which is just too stupid for words. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Jul 2008 14:26:02 -0400 From: Jean Rossner Subject: Re: [RS] Update from Richard. Thanks very much, Ron. I'm glad to hear that the person at Summerfest was overemphasizing (or perhaps I just misunderstood her). While I was there last year I met a woman from the US who was about to have a breast enhancement done the next day. With an US income, the peso ~3 to $1 and without inhibition from insurance companies and all that good stuff, it was going to cost her about 1/5 what it would in the US and the surgeon was one of the tops in the field. She even had a private "retreat" where she was going to recover in. Even the public health system isn't bad down there from what I've seen (though thankfully I haven't needed to use it!). A guy staying in a guest house owned by the same person that I rented from flew in from France and the next day woke up with severe pain from an abscessed wisdom tooth. Not even an Argentine citizen and he was quickly in and out of the emergency dentist with it removed and happily doped up on drugs and didn't pay a cent. When I left about two weeks later, he said he didn't even notice it any longer. _________________________________________________________________ Making the world a better place one message at a time. http://www.imtalkathon.com/?source=EML_WLH_Talkathon_BetterPlace ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Jul 2008 20:25:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: Re: [RS] Update from Richard. Good news indeed. Summerfest just wasn't the same without Richard. I'm thinking of trying to get some tickets to his show at the Naked Soul at the Rubin Museum of Art. Sounds like an interesting venue but maybe I'll wait to make sure it's not cancelled. Hoping he has a speedy recovery.
