I didn't know Richard was inspired by her music. I sorta thought it was the other way around!?? From the Folkwax review: The collection begins with one of those Anglo-American classics, "Silver Dagger" and moves on to another, "Mary Hamilton," which Nanci Griffith, along with Carolyn Hester and others, memorably reprised decades later during the Other Voices, Other Rooms project. "Birmingham Sunday," Farina's song that takes that Civil Rights event beyond newspaper headlines into history, is there, as is "Long Black Veil," a haunting and successful excursion into translating Country into Folk. Also include are two of Dylan's more kaleidoscopic songs, "Farewell Angelina" and "Love Is Just A Four Letter Word." The recording closes with Gram Parsons' "Hickory Wind," a fitting connection to the Country and Folk artists from Emmylou Harris to Richard Shindell, from Dar Williams to Rani Arbo, who have found, and still find, inspiration in the music of Joan Baez. carrie in kc ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2007 22:15:11 +0100 From: "Dave McKay" Subject: [RS] Shindell 101 My wife, Kay, whom some of you may have met on the couple of times she was at Falcon Ridge, is coming with me at the end of the month to see Richard play two house concerts out Gatwick Airport direction. Not being very familiar with his oeuvre, she's asked me to compile a mix CD/MP3 playlist of a representative selection of what the man's about, and what's she's likely to hear. So, any suggestions? Dave. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Aug 2007 17:42:46 -0400 From: pfleary@aol.com Subject: [RS] content and censorship Very much to my surprise Ron wrote: ? >>I'd personally hold off on the in-depth analysis until more than just FRFF attendees can participate. Not fair Ron!? Talking about shows, festivals, new songs, analyses of new songs is a big part of what this list is all about.? Shame on you for trying to limit the conversation(no to mention free speech!) on this list just because you did not attend FR and haven't heard the new songs yet.? Serious suggestion to follow . . . but "what he's about" and "what she's likely to hear" are often mutually exclusive when it comes to our boy Richard. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2007 22:40:40 -0400 From: "Vanessa Wills" Subject: Re: [RS] content and censorship Heya, I actually didn't really interpret Ron's post that way. He was saying that *he personally* would hold off, and while of course this was probably meant as a gentle suggestion to the rest of us, I don't think it's the same thing as limiting free speech. Especially since it was followed it up with "Of course, that's just what I think. Y'all's mileage may vary." I think we can all feel free to weigh in from time to time with our thoughts on what's appropriate list-chatter. In this case, particularly, the question was actually asked whether detailed analysis of very new songs was "bad form," so I think that's what occasioned the suggestion. - --V On 8/2/07, pfleary@aol.com wrote: > > Very much to my surprise Ron wrote: > ? > >>I'd personally hold off on the in-depth analysis until more than just > FRFF attendees can participate. > > Not fair Ron!? I just called and both shows are sold out. I wasn't sure if I'd be around, and now it looks like I'll be around at night. Richard's previous shows at the Turning Point have been some of the best shows I've seen. And it's just a few miles from where I live. If anyone has an extra ticket they'd like to sell, you can contact me off list at gjrsheridanyahoo.com. Thanks, Greg S. - --------------------------------- Moody friends. Drama queens. Your life?
