A friend of mine let me borrow Nanci Griffith's Flyer, and I loved "Going Back to Georgia" and "These Days in an Open Book"...they were close enough to feel like country songs but unlike country of the 80s and 90s they weren't brimming with platitudes. I would suggest Nanci is a great place to start, and a handful of folk-tinged country stars have agreed over the years: Kathy Mattea and Suzy Bogguss come immediately to mind. They have also each covered Cheryl Wheeler, another good choice. "75 Septembers" has a lot in common with country songs, and "Aces" IS a country song (your friend might not have heard the cover version--and even so there is something to be said for introducing them to the originals--I felt much better about this folk stuff once I knew where "Aces" and "Love at the Five and Dime" really came from). "Further and Further Away" and "Northern Girl" might be good choices too. The summer after I discovered Nanci Griffith I went to a folk festival where Nanci was playing and I heard Lyle Lovett and Dar Williams. Lyle did "That's Right (You're Not from Texas)" and "The Road to Ensenada" and Dar played "Traveling Again" and "Iowa." Dar led me to Richard Shindell via Cry, Cry, Cry. To convert a country fan I think you could start with "Are You Happy Now," "Next Best Western," and the version of "Reunion Hill" from Courier. Brooks & Dunn recorded a version of "My Love Will Follow You" so that's a safe bet. From Cry, Cry, Cry I would choose "By Way of Sorrow" or "Cold Missouri Waters." In general, I would avoid any socially-conscious, political, or gender-bendy songs. Likewise songs with too many words--and that leaves out most of the Dave Carter songbook. Oh but you could try "Farewell to Fiddler's Rim" and maybe, maybe "Tanglewood Tree," but only because that song is transcendent. Good luck with the conversion! It ain't no way to live, listening to too much (contemporary) country music. Just looked over at the Falcon Ridge site and Richard's going to be part of the Friday night song swap along with Lucy Kaplansky, Mary Gauthier and Marshall Crenshaw. Sounds interesting. Richard had no comment during the interview on WFUV on the rumor that they're going to have a Cry3 reunion there since all three will be there this year. And whoever suggested Fred Eaglesmith, I agree! Maybe the song of the week should be resurrected and we can do songs from SOD! Janet Tired of spam? Yahoo! On that Nancy Griffith album, there is a guest vocalist on Going Back to Georgia, as well as on a song called Talk To Me When I'm Listening. It's Adam Duritz from the group Counting Crows. If you were intrigued by his voice, he sings very Van Morrison-ish, and you may want to sample some of CC's music. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail?
