How do I gauge that? Easy: I *want* to listen to this album. It engages me, it draws me in - it pleases me. It shuts me up and makes me smile and not want to move. It makes me NOT want to change it and listen to something else. The chances of me listening to a Peter Gabriel album are slim to none, so I am happy to know of "Mercy Street", at all. I was done a favor with that, lol. To me, what he's doing here is being a journeyman folksinger. A guy who's (hopefully) in it for life. I would have to compare to the commitment of Richard Thompson, who's ended up covering so many things by now - in addition to his own great songs. There's no shame in performing material written by someone else. In fact I think its really, REALLY healthy. "there is no sin". I'd rather have an album of highly listenable covers than an album of weak originals. "Sitting on Top of the World"?? PRICELESS~! Maybe whatever originals Richard is toying with are not where he wants them yet. But if he's playing these other songs and they mean alot to him, why not make an album? I only own "Sparrow's Point" and "Courier", so admittedly, those 2 are hard acts to follow. Oh, wait! I own "Vuelta"! Got it from eMusic.com a few weeks ago. You know what? it has not drawn me in like SOD. I may be one sick puppy but I'd be really happy if Richard would do a whole album of whaling songs. Yes, he's an absolutely brilliant singer/songwriter. But he is also more. He is a man of the music world. Not insular to himself. He values community, and in this case that means singing the songs of others. I'd rather see him do this than be like, say, Joni Mitchell, who was incredibly brilliant for quite a while, but put out a bunch of smarmy overproduced (but self-penned!) crap after a certain point. All in the name of expanding as an artist, and NOT being part of the music community any longer. I'd rather have had a great cover album from her (not that she's ever do covers) than some of her 80's stuff. I'm happy that Richard did this. Even comparing it to SP and Courier, SOD delights me. And I have to tell you - I am NOT easily delighted. I bet he will be back with some mind-blowing originals someday, but in the meantime his "workouts" are a bit diff. Wanted to say oe more thing that popped into my head at some point. Well actually a couple of times listening to "Nora". It reminds me of Joni's "The Priest" as well as "The Last Time I Saw Richard". The depth of feeling is there, also, I feel. Richard was tapped into the same vein as the very best songwriters, I feel. Still is, I have a hunch. Em ps: you all tell me if I'm posting too much. But RS is important to my soul these days. as is JM, Dave Carter and a few more, so it feels good to talk to people who *might* know wtf I mean...thx ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 May 2007 13:14:01 -0500 From: "kunigunda" Subject: Fw: [RS]folkwaxine whoops forgot to add the link http://www.visnat.com/entertainment/music/folkwax/albumreviews.cfm - ----- Original Message ----- From: "kunigunda" To: Sent: Thursday, May 03, 2007 1:09 PM Subject: Re: [RS]folkwaxine > SOD is reviewed in this issue.
