(I don't know where "near Sacramento" you are, and of course what's close enough is subjective anyway.) If so, check out http://www.sgreenberg.org/concerts.htm for an excellent series. There used to be a house-concert series in Davis; it looked really good, but I never got there. (I lived in Berkeley 1984-1999.) Oh, OK--Google turned up this page: http://www.houseconcerts.us/houseconcerts/resources.html which appears to be an excellent directory for a number of states (and includes contact info for the Davis host). (And of course for non-house concerts there's the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, which is where I first saw Richard Shindell and many other performers. http://www.thefreight.org .) Good luck! We've had Antje Duvekot FOUR (4) times now at the University Cafi at Stony Brook University. Antje gets better and better. More polished and confident. Garnet Rogers knocked us out! He was really good. Too bad he didn't translate at the house concert for you. I can't see Garnet opening for anyone or anyone opening for him. He was a powerful performer. BTW, I'll volunteering be at Irvington Town Hall, Irvington, NY Sat night for Mary Gauthier and Eliza Gilkyson. I'll be wearing the black carpenter pants and walking the secret silly walk. Bart The State of California has no law prohibiting house concerts. Some communities in California have passed new ordinances (or interpreted old ones), that make it very tricky to continue to host them. It's happening in many states. We just lost a very nice series just outside of Boulder recently in an official county hearing. There was more going on than house concerts at the location tho, and the neighbors had a strong complaint. john - -- John Cleirigh | Boulder, CO | 303/590.4290http://johncleirigh.com/ | http://myspace.com/johncleirigh ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2007 11:11:26 -0700 From: "Pam Pickering" Subject: [RS] House Concerts Carrie, thanks for the heads up. There are actually some right around Sacramento although I've never heard of the performers. I appreciate the information and I'll definitely look into it. He didn't appear to be too excited to be there. They announced he would play a full set but did only 4 songs. It was at the church which holds about 120. I think he'd be great at a house concert. It was last winter and was very snowy and there weren't that many people there. It was a good concert with an appreciative albeit small audience. They made some bucks on cd sales after the show. Everyone was buying. Have fun!!! Is anyone going to see Richard tonight? Wish I lived in Chicago. I found this: _http://www.windycitymediagroup.com/gay/lesbian/news/ARTICLE.php?AID=14253_ (http://www.windycitymediagroup.com/gay/lesbian/news/ARTICLE.php?AID=14253) In conjunction with her March release, The Gospel Truth, Susan Werner will be performing with Richard Shindell on Saturday March 31 at the Old Town School of Folk Music. It cannot be denied that popular music as we know it has its roots buried deeply in religious hymns. Having seen her sing as a guest during Lee Lessackbs show, Werner really commands the audiencebs attention. Already having mastered the balance between jazz and folk, Werner certainly will testify the musical truths on Gospel Truth. Wow. Damn. Good show. Kinda short on mention of Richard's new CD though. wait...why does the web address say "gay/lesbian/news" ? ( Maybe I don't wanna know ? ) ( I actually think it's some kinda typo - or maybe a gay/lesbian paper? ) Whatever. ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Thanks to all who gave me tips. I'm 25 miles south of Sacramento, about 2 hours to Berkley but only 35 minutes or so to Davis (in good traffic). Seems the majority are in So Cal or the Bay Area so this locale might be perfect for a new venue!
