I know I mentioned it a few weeks back but I think a reminder is due. Jim Colbert, a long-time friend from this very discussion group, will be travelling all the way from Somewhere near Bellefonte, PA to open our next house concert on February 11. The performers he will be opening for are the amazing trio Red Molly, who have been popping up all over the radio and playing to full houses across the northeast. They recently were selected as one of the Falcon Ridge Showcase winners, and their latest CD 'Never Been to Vegas' was chosen as the #6 selection for 2006 in WUMB Boston's Top 10 albums of the year. Our place is located in Merrick, NY, on Long Island. If you have any interest please go to www.courthouseconcerts.com for details or to make reservations. You can also check out pictures from our past shows, including some shots of Ron Greitzer opening our first show in 2004. And in Shindell related news, has anyone heard anything about the covers CD? In August Richard said it would be released in March, but I have neither heard nor read anything new since the fall. It captures the essence of Richard live and solo, and the sound quality of the recording is surprisingly good. I had the great pleasure of being at the show itself, in a lovely old Vermont turn-of-the-century opera house. Richard is in fine voice and his guitar playing strikes me as impeccable and especially tuneful. The highlights are Lucy and Richard performing together, including a nice version of Last Fare of the Day, though Lucy's accompanying vocal didn't get picked up by the recording (on that particular song) as well as it might have. Cold Missouri Waters is terrific. The peak of the show is the second encore, Famous Blue Raincoat. These last two versions have me anticipating the covers album even more. - -- Greg ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2007 10:43:18 -0600 From: "kunigunda" Subject: Re: [RS] Live CD from Vermont Just checked the RS website. No mention of any live cd sales. Was hoping they might be available but maybe he's decided to sell them at future shows. I did notice some new performance dates mar/apr. Looks like cedar rapids is closest for me right now. He's gonna make it to out Berkley and Seattle too.....probably flying right over KC. Sob.. Thought I'd pass this along as this list is about a singer/songwriter who quite deliberately re-recorded an ancient Pete Seger song as a way of commenting on our current problems in Iraq. That was some time ago. Apparently the President Of The United States did not hear either Richard's or Pete's version. As they are reporting on NPR right now as I type - the President is planning to announce tonight that he will send an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq. Guess the President will explain it himself tonight. I don't know if I will watch the whole thing - sometimes I can't watch the guy - he gets me too upset. Anyway - for those here who are as upset about this as I am - here's some info and a website. There will be rallies tomorrow all across the nation to protest the "surge": _www.americasaysno.org_ (http://www.americasaysno.org) _http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/truemajority/event/dist ributedEventSearch.jsp?distributed_event_KEY=242&zip=07401&miles=30_ (http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/truemajority/event/distributedEv entSearch.jsp?distributed_event_KEY=242&zip=07401&miles=30) this one above might bring just the rallies near New York City .............................................................................. ................................................... Also - for those in or near Bergen County, NJ - there's this one too: Please join us in front of Congressman Scott Garrett's office tomorrow (Thursday) from 6pm to 7pm to tell him (and all the passersby on Route 4): "If you want to escalate, enlist!" Here are the details: Not One More Death, Not One More Dollar In Front of Scott Garrett's Office 210 Rt 4 East Paramus, NJ 07524 Thursday, 11 Jan 2007, 6:00 PM Let our voices be heard. Mr. Garrett needs to know that a large percentage of his constituents do not support this war and are horrified at the prospect of more lives being exposed in an illegal and immoral occupation. .............................................................................. ................... I am NOT trying to start a flame war with anyone on this list who might SUPPORT the surge. I actually feel like you have the right to hold that position - - and that you could still be a Richard Shindell fan. I am personally very troubled by our current circumstance - and I am especially troubled by it's "damned if you do - damned if you don't " character. I don't know how to get us out of this mess - or what the eventual consequences will be if we stay - or if we leave. But sending 21,500 more young American men and women into harm's way makes no sense to me - and it seems like it's really a mostly political move by the Bush people - a final major card to play as a way to buy some time and then be able to leave office and let this mess become somebody else's problem. Pete Seger said it a long time ago: "Waistdeep in the big muddy... ...and the big fool said to push on" nice page with the lyrics: _http://history.sandiego.edu/gen/snd/waistdeep.html_ (http://history.sandiego.edu/gen/snd/waistdeep.html) see ya....
