Obviously, playing with someone as popular as Tom Paxton is a good thing professionally for RS (as was playing with Joan Baez). I wasn't implying that it was a bad move by Richard at all. Somewhere in all the posts of the last few days, someone asked about Great Barrington MA and Club Helsinki. GB is one of the most western cities of Massachusetts. It's a very cool place with lots of neat art and music venues (The Guthries live one town over and the Guthrie Center is one of the best venues I've been to). Club Helsinki is a great place to see a show, similar to the Iron Horse which Richard plays a lot in Northampton. But if you are coming a long way to see a show there like I am, keep in mind it'll be a late night as there shows start at 9 and usually don't start on time. Back in late 1994, I went to see Tom Paxton (of whom I was a pretty big fan at the time) at the Hurdy Gurdy in Paramus, New Jersey. Wasn't familiar with the opening act, but after seeing her, she blew me away so much THAT I DIDN'T EVEN STAY FOR PAXTON. > >Who was the opening act? It's great. It's a small club in a Finnish restaurant on the main drag in Great Barringing -- surprisingly good and interesting food. It's pretty tiny and you should try to get a table near the stage. It's been a year and a half since I've seen a show there so I don't remember how the seating is done (i.e. whether you need to buy dinner to sit close and whether you get a specific table reservation, though I think not, when you get a ticket); it's worth asking them because it really is small, and oddly-shaped, so where you sit makes a difference. I'd be trekking there from Boston for the RS show if I hadn't already made plans to go further afield (Portland OR) for a different concert. On other threads: 1) WUMB did a "happy birthday Richard" feature this morning; and 2) my folk birthday/famous people experiences include throwing a birthday party for Pete Seeger at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago when I worked there (I got to hold the cake when he blew out the candles), and celebrating my birthday every year of the past four with Tracy Grammer (who shares the birthday); two years ago I got a cake for the entire audience at Passim and all sang happy birthday to her.
