I've got nothing against Tom Paxton, he seems fine, as much as I know about him. I've never seen him live, but I've heard him on the radio. He sounds like a perfect example of what I used to think folk music was and had to be. And he sure didn't inspire me to be a fan of folk music. I could understand someone being disappointed to hear that Richard Shindell is in a co-bill with a stereotypical folkie. Richard is outstanding! Sure, he's a folk artist, singer/songwriter, but I find a lot of rock and roll in him, and that's what turned me on to him. He's got an edge, a rock sensibility, a gift for hooks in his songwriting, guitar playing, and vocal delivery, without any of the cheesy stuff that makes you wonder whether you should chuckle politely or go find a shrub to vomit into. In a lot of posts, people rave about other artists to listen to, or mention another artists they've recently seen and liked. Often I look the artist up and listen to some songs. Then I often wonder if the poster really "gets" Richard, and appreciates how great Richard really is, to mention this other artist in the same sentence or paragraph. There are exceptions, and sometimes worthy artists are mentioned, like Lori McKenna, who is also just amazing in my opinion. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Aug 2006 08:02:29 -0400 From: Georgette deFriesse Subject: [RS] Completely OT The latest Orion magazine has an article about the recuperadas of Argentina. I know, I felt the same way when I bought tickets for Mark Erelli and Iris Dement. I thought it was a co-bill but he was only the opening act. I remember one time I bought tickets to see Richard and later finding out it was a co-bill with Lucy! Surprise, surprise. As for that burger joint near Madison Sq Park, I hope it's not McDonald's! OK, > so the song is from '85, but does he have anything current? Actually, yeah, he usually has some free downloads of short shelf life songs on his web site: http://www.tompaxton.com/download.html He won a grammy in '05 for a kids record, had grammy nominated albums in '03 and this year (not that I want to get into the whole grammy debate, but it is some degree of validation to the masses), has a Martin signature guitar, got a couple lifetime achievement awards... he's still out there doing what he's always done, even if he's not the flavor of the week. I'm not, like, a die-hard Paxton fan, but I just think you're missing a whole lot of good music if you base your opinion primarily on one novelty song. Obviously we're all on this list because we DO appreciate how great Richard really is. Most of us could be catagorized as borderline rabid fans. However, there's alot of other good music out there worthy of appreciation also. I personally like hearing about other artists being listened to and have found alot of great new stuff through this list, Lori Mckenna being just one. Re Tom Paxton. I'm not at all crazy about him but he has written some classics that are still being recorded and played today. That's a feat worthy of recognition at least. After listening to him as an opener just think how great Richard will sound in comparison! Every RS show I have been to has had an opening act that can't measure up to Richard. That's the way it's meant to be! BTW has everyone seen the list of music RS is listening to...or was a couple months ago? 1. Axel Krygier - Zorzal 2. Juana Molina - Son 3. Bruce Springsteen - The Pete Seeger Sessions 4. World Cup Commentary 5. Mercedes Sosa - En Argentina 6. Leon Gieco - Desenchufado 7. I think everyone needs to calm down. :) Like John, I'm not a big fan of Tom Paxton. I respect him as an artist and his importance but I don't like him. I, too, would be dissipointed to find a RS show witha double bill like that. There's nothing wrong with that. We all have one common similarity - we love Richard's music. But I am sure our tastes differ from there. Many people here seem to be big into the Kaplansky, Carter, McKenna, Erelli group of singer-songwriters. I personally don't like them at all but that's just my preference. As I am sure many people here wouldn't like my other favorite singer-songwrriters (like Kelly Joe Phelps, Garnet Rogers, Greg Brown) or other types of music (huge fan of international folk music which is what I listen to more than anything else). And I am sure there are some here who don't like folk music - they just like Richard. I personally don't believe it makes us anymore superior or right to like a certain other musician if it be Tom Paxton or someone else. Songs mean a lot to people because they speak to them and not all artists speak to everyone in a way that is meaningful. > > >He won a grammy in '05 for a kids record, had grammy nominated albums >in '03 and this year (not that I want to get into the whole grammy >debate, but it is some degree of validation to the masses), has a >Martin signature guitar, got a couple lifetime achievement awards... >he's still out there doing what he's always done, even if he's not the >flavor of the week. > >I'm not, like, a die-hard Paxton fan, but I just think you're missing a >whole lot of good music if you base your opinion primarily on one >novelty song. > >(What if "she's in spain and I'm in pain" was the only Richard song >someone had ever heard? I stood in line and ordered and got a burger there last year while waiting for Dar to perform ( she was brilliant, as always). I remember thinking while I was eating the burger "Hmmm... this is pretty good - and by New York City standards - the price is quite reasonable. What could possibly explain this??? About 2 months later, I turn on the TV and there was somebody telling me the story of the shake shack - some restaurateur dude retired or something - then he took on the shake shack as a hobby or something. Anyway... pretty good burgers and shakes. Burger was $5 buck-ish, if I remember. ahh... BUT.... is there any interest in bring a store-bought ( or homemade, I suppose ) cake with us... and embarrassing Richard by singing "Happy Birthday" to him.. in front of the whole crowd? I was handed Mr. Jerry Garcia a cake in front of 20,000 people at Roosevelt Stadium a million years ago ( well OK,,, it was 1973, I think.... ). It was fun... I still remember the moment Jerry leaned down and took the cake out of my hands... at which point he said "hey... thanks a lot man...". I haven't had all that exciting a life... but it's had one or two moments... ( There is also a real possibility that Mr. Bruce Springsteen once asked me to stop leaning against the hood of his car so he could drive home. He was VERY polite. ) And I had sex with Jennifer Garner.... ( yeah... I made the last one up...)
