Especially for old time folkies like me who remember him well from "the good old days." His songs still resonate and a co-bill with Richard is a mighty good show indeed. You won't be sorry, John, trust me. He's also a heck of a nice guy. Unlike John Sebastian, a once childhood hero, whose behavior was less than friendly and accommodating when he played here in my neighborhood a couple of summers ago. The "One Million Lawyers Guy"??!! > I can take a joke, but could he be less original? Yeah, I remember hearing that song in the early eighties before it was on vinyl. Might want to go with something a little more recent. Some of his songs haven't aged well, especially some of the political satire - although, funny the more things change... that's why they're short shelf life songs. but I always liked the man, myself. I enjoyed hearing him live the couple times I've had the chance to. Admittedly, you're not going to hear him leaking out of my headphones as often as, say, Richard or Red Molly or David Olney or Lori McKenna, but to me, Paxton is an icon.. - -jim, somewhere near mt. nittany ps I like Tom Rush and Eric Andersen, too. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2006 09:48:53 -0400 From: sdgold60@optonline.net Subject: [RS] ethical center ill be the madison square park show. i have been to bayshore in May. its a traditional concert hall, without a bad seat in the house. its about a 600 seat theater. ethical culture has stunning acoustics. its set up like church but isnt one. The seats are numbered pew seats with plenty of room between people. they started having concerts about a year ago. its not as large as town hall and a comfortable, adult space to see music. the sound cant be beat the only risk is MSPark where hte drunks will do a dance behind richard or people who dont care about him will catcall or talk through the show.... there are people who will go to any free show in NYC.... then there are loyal and reliable FUV listening fans who will show up... count me in the second catagory... would go to the Eliza Gilkyson/ mary gauthier but Dar is at the Rubin Museum that night Richard is in King Of Prussia with Maura Oconnell this month that i may head down to see.. hopefully there are new cds.... how old is richard.... Older than dirt from what you all are saying.. we are born in the same year.... i am older and dirtier.... by 7 months sharonG - -- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2006 07:44:51 -0700 (PDT) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: Re: [RS] tom paxton Boy am I dumb, I had no idea Tom Paxton had a song about lawyers! Guess he didn't sing it the night I saw him. He put on a great performance though. Funny you mention John Sebastian, Ron. I used to go see him all the time years ago but saw him a few years ago and he's lost his voice. He's good for one song but that's about it! I'm going to be in the city the day Richard's playing at the park. I might go but maybe not. I don't know if I can stand rude people talking during the concert, not to mention the drunks! That King of Prussia park is a very nice place. Saw Richard there last year and there's a chance I might be in Philly that day so maybe I'll skip the NYC show and see him there. I guess it all depends on the weather! I'm still a little put off with rain right now after Falcon Ridge! And Jim, I'm with you about David Olney! I especially love "Dillinger" and "Jesse James." Tom Rush is one of the funniest people I have ever seen on stage, in addition to being a great folksinger. He has such outrageous stories about people from back in the day. Eric can be great too, when he is on. He's written some of the best folksongs ever. I'm just annoyed that I'm missing two RS shows, and now I'm going to a co-bill with an artist I would never see. That said, Tom Paxton has always struck me as a somewhat vapid. He's got the troubador trappings: acoustic guitar, facial hair, and I'll bet he wears a hat--but little else, and that's why he struck me like something from A Mighty Wind--something of a caricature. I guess I'm just not a fan, and I'm a little disappointed that someone whose career peak came in the Sixties--when civil rights were hailed and protected by lawyers, should complain about the latter's presence. OK, so the song is from '85, but does he have anything current? Scathing analysis of recent corporate scandals where "Ken Lay" rhymes with "Pay Day, or "Tyco" with "Psycho." ?? How about "Exxon" with "Enron."?? I think he is all the thing s that you said (don't know about the little else part) - a troubadour, acoustic guitar, facial hair, etc. I guess those are some of the reasons I like him and I think that he deserves to be recognized as one of "those" folkies from way back who got little attention and deserved a lot more. I don't want to be disrespectful of opinions which I do not share, and I felt that the manner in which I articulated mine were disrespectful. That hinders the kind of open discussion I like here.
