Ha! The line was around the > corner. Seems like R is a bit too popular for this small venue. It's really good to hear that all three recent PA shows (Harrisburg, Godfrey's and Club Cafe) have been very well attended, if not flat-out sold out (I know the Godfrey Daniels show was.) Yes, there is a state west of Philly and yes, we will come to the shows! IT was only prior committments that kept me from making all three shows. Jim (who, I might point out, has never seen Richard without at least a 3 hour drive each way attached!) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 May 2006 17:05:23 -0700 (PDT) From: Brian Walsh Subject: [RS] Richard Shindell Beachland Ballroom 05/04/06 My wife and I were happy to buy tickets to Richard's show at the Beachland Tavern this year, he usually only comes to Cleveland every two years but we got lucky this year because we had seen him at the Beachland Ballroom in the fall of 2004, a little ahead of schedule. The concert happened to fall on the day before my brother's birthday, who just happened to be recently engaged. Not only that, but I gave my brother a copy of Vuelta for Christmas and he liked it. So we decided to meet him and his fiance at the Grovewood Tavern, just around the corner from the Beachland, and they wanted to see the concert as well. Now I was hoping we might see Richard at the Grovewood before the show because we talked to him there before the 2004 show. Perhaps he could wish my brother and his fiance bueno suerte? That would have been a treat. But we had a great meal just the same, RS was not there and when we went to the Beachland we saw WKSU radio station had a recording van outside so we thought he must be busy with that stuff. The Beachland Tavern is next to the Beachland Ballroom. Richard usually plays at the Ballroom so I was unprepared for the Tavern. The Tavern was nice though, very small and low key, a great place to see Richard, actually, a treat because you are only a few feet from him. He sat through the whole show, and was accompanied by Rad for most of the songs except the first two, "Waist Deep..."and "Fenario". I must say that when he came out and played "Waist Deep...." and "Fenario" he sounded awesome. The guitar alone was fantastic, explosive. I apologize for not knowing the name of the opening act, a very good folk singer, but when RS came out and started on the "Waist Deep... " the crowd was tuned in. I have seen the set list of the Pittsburgh show and I think the Cleveland show was basically the same. For the encore he and Rad did "Pancho and Lefty", a Townes Van Zandt song, and it was very good. I am not a fan of the covers so this was nice, but I don't care for "Born in the USA" or "Senor". To me Richard is selling himself short in doing a CD of covers, his music is better than Springsteen's for sure, and just shy of Dylans. But I heard he might do a Josh Ritter song, who is very fresh and fun, and we loved the version he did of "Cold Missouri Waters" at the concert. At the end of the night Richard said the'd be heading to the Grovewood Tavern , but it was 11:00 and we had to drive to Akron and I had to work the next day. My daughter's high school Spanish teacher was at the concert as well, a very special lady who brought books to Richard for the school he supports in Buenos Aires. The next day was "Cinco de Mayo" for her classes, so she had to leave too. I am sure we all would have liked to go back to the Grovewood and partied. My disappointment of the evening? 'Reunion Hill" - if Richard won't finger pick it then I'd rather not hear him strum it and have Rad do some Bossa Nova chords on the piano. To me that is a signature song and if he is tired of doing it than don't play it, don't turn it into muzak. Also, I'd much rather hear Shindell songs than "the Boss". I'd rather hear "Wisteria" than "Senor" . I'd rather hear "Nora" on guitar than "Born in the USA" on bouzouki. My favorite of the evening? His versions of "Waist Deep...." and "Fenario" were fantastic, even though I am not always politically aligned with Richard, he knocked them out. Also, to me "Cancion Sencilla" was beautiful, as was "Last Fare of the Day" and "There goes Mavis". What was missing? "Hazel"s House" Am I the only one in the world that has (had) an aunt like that? 'Wisteria" and many others from "SNP" except "Transit" which was superb, as usuall. Richard looked good, almost as if he lost a pound or two, and was in very good spirits. Good night.
