Ashland Coffee and Tea turned out to be an excellent venue, small but not too small, well set up, and fine acoustics. A train track goes right by, and when Richard came out, he was practically facing a locomotive. He made it a prop, started waving to the passengers, called out, "we're going to need more seats in here." He was throughout in great spirits, cheerful, relaxed, communicative. Six months ago he seemed tired, worn down even. When he came out for his encore, he announced Last Fare (requested earlier) and someone shouted out, "I'll give you $5 for Summer Wind." He said, "That's the most brazen request I've ever had," and later, after Last Fare, "show me the cash." But he did finish up with it. The most interesting facet of the performance was the different stylings of many of his songs. I didn't think the bouzouki added anything to Mary Magdalen, but then it sounded great on Senor. I could hear all kinds of percussive effects from the acoustic on Mavis, the best I've ever heard that song sound. He used the electric a lot. Fishing had a reflective, almost meandering quality, perfect for the interrogator's reflective parts, and for his victim (if less so for the actual interrogation)--I thought it was powerful. Since he had the electric in hand, he did Wisteria with it, and it also sounded fine. He did Born in the USA, said it would be on the new album, and praised Springsteen's new album twice. When *someone* rudely asked what year the new album might appear, he explained that it kept getting better as musicians added new stuff--when it started getting worse, he would release it. He did say that May 9 was the final mixing, and...we'd hear via e-mail when it was for sale. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V8 #63 **********************************
