I thought he was going to do FBR, but figured it was just wishful thinking on my part--I thought the bass player shook him off, like a 3-2 curveball. Caught the Irvington Show last night, with Terrence Martin. Great voice and some nice songs, which sounded vaguely familiar. Do they play him on WFUV? RS was solo, and I was a little disappointed when he started out wiuth Fishing and then went to Senor, thinking he was going to do the same set list as the IMAC show. It wouldn't have been bad--I just haven't seen him very often, so I like as much variety as possible. He had the bouzouki and the electric, and mixed it up nicely. The set list is from memory, so if I miss a spot, forgive me: Fishing (this is a somber version, but not quite as dissonant has the version he played at the Northampton show, and, to me doesn't have the same sense of menace from the interrogator) Senor Acadian Driftwood (bouzouki works well on this. I'm not too familiar with the original, but I don't remember the song having the sense of displacement and alienation that RS brings to the fore with the bouzouki and his voice. They're there in the lyrics, obviously, but the song never struck me in that way). Fenario Big Muddy Reunion Hill (played on the electric and a little too slow and laborious for me) Mary Magdalene (He said that he wrote this on the bouzouki, but then forgot that he had done so! He played the version closer to the studio--not the DADGAD--one. Nice version, and I'm becoming ambivalent about the bouzouki). Texas Rangers There Goes Mavis (still astonished at his guitar work on this) Cancillon Sencilla Hazel's House You Stay Here AYHN Courier Transit Abuelita As usual, he asked for requests. I yelled out FBR to no avail. He did Courier instead, but several people had asked for Abuelita, and he obliged in the encore. The Irvington Theatre is a nice venue, small and cozy, and reminds of the theatre where Lincoln was shot--balconies and all. RS said he used to live across the street from the theatre years ago, and nothing has changed! Great show, overall, and I still prefer him solo, bouzouki nothwithstanding. I can't say enough about Terence Martin and yes I believe they play him alot on WFUV. I know that John Platt is a big fan of his, he introduced him at a festival last year. I was wondering if Richard joined him on his set. I think that theatre is a replica of the Ford Theatre and when I saw Mark Erelli there last month, he pointed to the balcony and said, "If I were you pal, I'd watch my back!" That got a big laugh. Speaking of Mark Erelli, he's playing this coming Friday at the University Cafe in Stony Brook, on Long Island. WUSB 90.1 is hosting it, Charlie Backfish, a DJ on the station, has had a slew of great artists there. It's an intimate venue and the prices are reasonable too. Here's the web site: http://www.universitycafe.org/ You have to click on "Special events" to see who's playing on the Sunday series, although I don't see anything about Mark Erelli. But he definitely is playing this coming Friday, April 14 at 8, I'm not too sure of the time though. Janet Tired of spam? Yahoo!
