RattlinRonD ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2006 09:12:02 -0500 From: "John Fix 3rd" Subject: [RS] Couples Even before hearing Richard state that he wrote them as two couples I felt that the first couple was older and looking for a missing son or daughter. They took a cab to go across the bridge back to New Jersey because they were truly exhausted after a day of fruitless searching. There would have been no way for them to bring a car into the city in those days after 9/11, and they didn't have the energy to get back home via mass transit. The second couple lives in the city, otherwise why take a cab back to New Jersey? The baby would have been born a day or two prior to the cabbie picking them up at the hospital, so if they lived in New Jersey the father would have surely driven their own vehicle into the city rather than relying on a random cab to bring their newborn home. City dwellers wouldn't think twice about hailing a cab for a ride back to their apartment, but even if a suburban couple chose a NY City hospital for the delivery of their child I seriously doubt they wouldn't make better plans for getting home. :-) Plus, making them the same couple is just too schmaltzy (is that a word?). There are millions of people in the metro NY area, and the song is all about the ebb and flow of life, people die, people are born, all in the vast flowing stream that is time flowing by. Making them the same couple seems more appropriate for a Hallmark Theater presentation that a RS song. Sorry, don't want to drag the discussion out too much, but it's a fun debate.
