I don't have any calculater humor with which to entertain the list, but last night on The History Channel, I was pretty excited to watch a really neat program on Modern Marvels. It was all about concrete! I'm not joking. :) Theresa ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Dec 2005 11:27:43 -0500 From: John McDonnell Subject: [RS] Re: A Few Good Lawyers Hi All, Bill wrote: >>So a bunch of you are lawyers, aye? Liberal lawyers mostly from the north east and the left coast... This explains a lot. It's no wonder this Civil Engineer/Army Helicopter Pilot from Colorado can't relate or sometimes even understand what the bleep you're talking about when you dissect Shindell's music to the Nth degree.<< Son, we live in a world that has folk songs. And those songs have to be interpreted by men with law degrees. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Warrant Officer Chmelir? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Richard Shindell and you curse the lawyers. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: That Shindell's songs, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves songs. You don't want the truth, because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on this list. I'd prefer you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a copy of Derrida's "Speech and Phenomena and other essays on Husserl's Theory of Signs" and send a post. :) John McD. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Dec 2005 14:01:40 -0500 From: "Norman Johnson" Subject: [RS] To the lawyers There's an guy from Argentina, who has been in a cell somewhere in Dade county for 6 weeks. Frick" Subject: [RS] RE: Lawyers I feel obliged to chime in as a practicing Civil Engineer in Colorado in my third year of law school. I had a client once call me a "mutant". So in response to Sandy's email (the engineer-lawyer-doctor joke), I would count my blessings, leave the country, and write a letter explaining how to fix the guillotine! I like the true Scalia interpretation of RS's lyrics - strict constructionist unless it conflicts with my party's "agenda"! In other words, I love to find out what Richard's story is behind the song, but what always turns me onto his music is how I initially interpret it and how it fits into my life at the moment - because it always seems to. - -Don ps. Now we all know that we need to be careful when talking about "concrete" vs. "cement", and "ethical lawyer" as an oxymoron. Theresa wrote: "Well, add another Civil Engineer to the tally.
