Roxy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Nov 2005 23:44:26 -0500 From: Jamie Younghans / John McDonnell Subject: [RS] RE: Shindell Miscellany Hi All, Knew the Carnegie Hall gig would be good. Big show, big night, just sorry I missed it. I did want to acknowledge responses to my last posts re LFOTD, but had not been able to engage in discussion, as I was away. Without belaboring the issue, I have to thank Christy and Randy for their insights, since I never thought about the song that way, and although I mentioned NBW in comparing it to LFOTD, I never really drew the parallel between the songs, and I find that an interesting way to look at both songs: as a continuum. Also, although there is some agreement that the narrator of NBW is not a trucker, I always think of him as such. The first RS CD I heard was Courier (you know I'm a rookie!), and he talks about a trilogy of trucking songs, of which NBW is one. I always associate long distance driving with truckers, though I know there are many people (like John C) who drive long distances in cars. It may not make sense that he is a trucker, since I don't know of any toll where a truck can pay a quarter. Also, as for the Spanish Inquisition inquiry--it isn't just that it's unexpected, but that Michael Palin never quite gets right the number of weapons at his disposal. He starts out saying "Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear, fear and surprise.... Our TWO weapons are fear and surprise, and ruthless efficiency.... Our THREE weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope. Our FOUR weapons . . . ." you get the idea. I just didn't know when to stop, when I said I would. . . . . like now. John McD. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V7 #287 ***********************************
