Eastern Standard Time, Norman suggests: >>If it's the EOTS tour, it could not be early '97, Ron. Dar's album wasn't even released till July of that year.<< The Fez show was a special industry preview, or advance try-out of the EOTS band and tour, which began in the summer of '97. I don't recall the exact month, but I know it was long before the record was released. I remember doing the first of a series of interviews with Dar at the Razor & Tie studios just before and getting a reviewer's copy of the EOTS CD. Actually, the Iron Horse shows which came later, where I did the second interview, spanned two days and may have been the kick-off performances of that tour. If memory serves. Which it often doesn't. Admittedly. RevealinRonD ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Oct 2005 09:11:52 -0400 From: Amy Cocuzza Subject: [RS] at least I've never camped on his front stoop... I tried to post this yesterday, but per usual I sent it from the wrong email address. *sigh*...I need a better system. BTW - I'll be at Carnegie Hall too. Can't wait! It's my week late birthday gift to myself. Okay, I think I fall somewhere in the middle - not quite a newbie, but a total Johnny-come-lately compared to some of ye olde timers. I first saw Richard in '99 at Falcon Ridge with Cry x3. I remember very clearly hearing them perform "Cold Missouri Waters" and being absolutely transfixed. Stunned. Awed to tears. etc. I'm a music hound, but it's rare for me to have such a strong and visceral reaction on first listen, particularly in a setting like that. I was immediately hooked. As for number of live performances...hmm. My best guess is that I'm hovering somewhere around the 30 mark. There probably is a quasi-stalker element to it, because I'll drive all over hell's half-acre to catch a good show. And I've lived in three different parts of NY since 1999 - Albany, Ithaca and Manhattan - so I've covered a substantial geographic swath. And I recently rented a car to drive up to Dutchess County to see him, two nights after catching a Long Island show. And I figured out that "Hazel's House" is set next door to my birthplace. And I've twice ordered friends to schedule weddings around his touring schedule. Oh crap. Do they have a 12-step program for this? Now my two cents on the covers. I agree with the assessment that there probably won't be many surprises on this album, should it come to fruition. Of course, I'll be happy as a clam with an album of the usual suspects. But if we're gonna reach a little, I'd love love love to hear him do Dan Bern's "Children of the Cold War". Kind of anachronistic at this point, but I can really see Richard owning that one. He once told me that he thinks "Alexandra Leaving" (off Leonard Cohen's "Ten New Songs") is a brilliant song, so I'd pay to hear his take on it. Umm - Sting's "Mad About You". Maybe - here's a real stretch - an early Pixies cut like "Where is My Mind?" Truth be told, I'm usually anti-cover because most artists just try to replicate the original. That can be fun live, but it seems kind of flat for the studio. This isn't really an issue with Richard, because he's a fine enough craftsman to put his own stamp on anything he covers. Still, if we're looking at an entire album of someone else's songs I'm gonna pull for something a little genre-bending. (One of my favorite live acts these days is a group of 16 professional NYC jazz musicians. They call themselves the Bjorkestra and they play big-band arrangements of Bjork songs - brilliant!) In any event, I'd best quit while I'm ahead. "Blue Divide" had recently come out, and I was still trying to figure out whether I liked this guy or not. Neither "Sparrows Point" nor "Blue Divide" had really done much for me, but after seeing him live, the rest was history. Richard's show next month here in San Diego will be #60 for me. Yes, I do believe I've achieved stalker status. Some of you may have seen Richard at the Point Theater in Bryn Mawr, PA; where he appeared numerous times over the years. Alas, that venue has now closed. Richard will be appearing just "up the road a piece" in Sellersville, PA on Nov 20. I have bugged management here for several years to sign him. So far there are only 80 tickets sold in a gorgeous room that holds 300. PLEASE help Richard have a good audience for this show! If you or your RS-loving friends are in Philly, south Jersey, King of Prussia, Reading, Wilmington, the Lehigh Valley, even New York - it is easy to get to this theater. Spread the word, and check out www.ST94.com for info. Tickets are under $20. I am driving my co-workers crazy with my Shindell sermons...I can't fill this place alone! Off my soapbox now.
