I'm thinking specifically of "Calling the Moon" and "Sing Me Back Home." I don't really like the original of either of those songs, though I like RS' versions. As any of us who have read any literary criticism can attest, not all good readers are good writers, but I have found that all good writers are good readers. Perhaps RS, as a songwriter, was able to appreciate and bring out something in those songs which I didn't. Someone suggested an R.E.M. cover (can't find the post), and I think he would do a fine cover of a lot of the songs on "Green" (You Are Everything, and World Leader Pretend, come to mind), as well as (Don't Go Back to) Rockville. I'm not a country music fan, but I am in complete agreement with Sharon G's suggestion of Hank Williams. Good songwriting always trumps genre. That, of course, is illegal. This happened a lot years ago on ebay. Looks like it still occurs. Tracks: Are You Happy Now?, Nora, Fisherman, Reunion Hill, Next Best Western, Behind The Iron Gate You Stay Here, Transit, Abuelita. No cover art is available. It is in excellent condition and has great sound. No, I'm not familiar with this but something seems amiss. He certainly wasn't singing Transit and Abuelita in 1997. I first saw Richard live in October of 1998 and it was not until at least 1999 when he played (wrote?) Transit. In fact, I remember when he played it at Passim in May of '99 and then at a house concert in August '99 it wasn't even finished yet. Sister Maria made an early appearance changing the tire, but hadn't made it to the prison if I remember correctly. Oh wait, maybe the World Cafi bonus tracks are a later date. Richard had written the first part of what was to become Transit in May 99. He played it at the Iron Horse, unnamed and half-finished-- to a wide-eyed and wide awake crowd. Sister Maria was then a minor character, and the story left the horde in the vortex. How do you guys feels about this issue. Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters) makes the point that if you're a struggling musician trying to make it and someone is ripping you off, then sharing is bad and you have a right to complain, but if you're a multi-millionaire worried about pennies then F--- you. Although I agree, it doesn't really address whether sharing is bad in and of itself. I have no idea whether RS is a multi-millionaire or not (if he is, I'm guessing it's not from his music sales, which is an indictment of our music industry and celebrity culture), but I would be uncomfortable buying a live show, as opposed to just sharing it. I am more than willing to give the artist the money, and even more willing to spread the word via sharing. Maybe sending a contribution to his Crecer Con Amor for every bootleg would justify it. Convinced as I am that he is better live (and solo) than in the studio, I will do almost (I said almost) anything for a recording of a live show. Is this pure denial? Listing them not that I ever anticipate hearing RS sing them -- but simply pondering how I imagine he might sing them and how he might exaggerate or soft peddle their meanings by inserting different pauses or placing the emphasis on different words. "In a Restaurant by the Sea" written by Joh Bucchino "Saturdays" and/or "Faster & Faster" written by David Kitt "Rexroth's Daughter" written by Greg Brown "When Time is Stolen" written by Joan Baez All of them sad. Listening to RS sing his own songs made me hear these others differently; so thanks, Bill ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V7 #222 ***********************************
