He not only covers great tunes but always does them ina great way. CHARGE!!! Hey you guys, Anyone I talk to about music knows that I am a cover song junkie. I love it when my favorite artists interpret well-known songs, putting their own spin on them, or when they do obscurities, enabling me to discover an artist they like but I may have never heard of. Some become my favorite versions, while others get a 'nice try' and slip to the bottom of the pile, but I always like to hear them. Richard has recorded some excellent covers over the years, with 'Cold Missouri Waters,' 'Shades of Grey' and 'Calling The Moon' my favorites (although after a few years of listening to both versions I can't say I like Richard's better than Dar's. Both are amazing.) With this subject on the table, here is my wish list of covers I'd choose for Richard to record. I am including primarily songs that I have never heard him perform, and I feel pretty confident that I never will actually hear any of them (well, maybe one of them), but here goes anyway: Mariano (Robert Earl Keen) Duncan (Paul Simon) Streets of Laredo (?) Moon River (Henry Mancini) Bobby Feller (a song Dan Bern has written, but never recorded. I cherish the scratchy bootleg version I have. It's a sincere, poignant song about the things you miss on the road while trying to get from point A to point B, and I think Richard would love it and sing the hell out of it.) Did She Mention My Name? (Gordon Lightfoot) Windfall (Jay Farrar, when he was in Son Volt) Northbound 35 (Jeffrey Foucault) Famous Blue Raincoat (Leonard Cohen - I know Richard has sung it often, but I've never gotten to hear it, and it's such an amazing song) Half a World Away (I have read that Richard has stated he doesn't like R.E.M., but this would be perfect for him. Actually, Country Feedback would be better, but that wouldn't happen in a million years) Pancho and Lefty (Townes Van Zandt. I love Townes' version, but I'm not a big fan of Willie and Merle's. I think Richard would do it right) Let's see some more suggestions, please. This was fun. I am a fan of Dan Bern but always believed some of his best songs he has never recorded. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V7 #218 ***********************************
