For example, I recently saw Bruce Springsteen on the "Devils and Dust" tour and he definitely has a show closer that works as the final song for the show ("Matamoros Banks"). After a brief pause (about a minute) he came back on for an "encore" and played "Ramrod" and "Bobby Jean" which definitely were not songs that would have fit easily into the rest of the show. He finished with three additional songs that brought the show back closer to the rest of the show, none of the songs essential or obvious songs that he HAD to play, but all songs that he was playing as the closers of most of the tour. So there was no spontaneity but there was definitely a thematic/pacing reason for breaking the final songs up with the standard encore routine. Just setting the record straight. Poor Gene even provided the lyrics to you-know-what and placed them on the stage but Richard either never saw them or slyly pretended not to notice. I live for the day when Richard does indeed play you-know-what. Geez, I hope Gene and Isabelle are in the audience. If they aren't, it will mean more years of therapy for the both of them. Egad! Talk about a cruel rain. Sorry Amy C. You must introduce yourself to other listers so we can recognize you. My bad. Maybe Putnam County is the buffer? I will do my best to break the Putnam barrier in October--I'm going to try to catch one of the MA gig in October (Iron Horse). I'm even planning to stay at a Best Western (really). Towne Crier gig sounds like it was a great show.
