John McD. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 08:26:01 EDT From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [RS] The Island Redux John McD covered the Brokerage show last night pretty well in his post. It was a solid Richard performance despite his forgetting a bunch of lines to many of the songs. I was excited when he began the opening notes to "One Man's Arkansas" but alas, he finally gave up after not being able to remember the lyrics. Then he teased us by beginning "Money for Floods" and try as he might, he just couldn't remember it and threw that out too. How sad--I haven't heard him do that song in years. We got Arrowhead instead as an encore. Kudos to local East End singer-songwriter James O'Malley who opened and treated us to two brand new songs, one of which, "The Dance" was downright Shindellian. O'Malley is a major talent woefully unheralded in the folk world. He's as good as they get in my book. And a damned nice guy. And we went to the same Brooklyn High School. Egad! His newest CD, "If Only In My Dreams" is a terrific record, not a bad cut on the album. Give a listen and maybe get one of his records at _www.jamesomalley.com_ (http://www.jamesomalley.com) . You won't be sorry. I was surprised to hear Richard say afterward that a lot of people are not liking "Vuelta." In my opinion it's his best record (just edges out "Sparrows Point" but not by much) and "There Goes Mavis" may be the greatest song he's ever written (Richard certainly thinks this is so). Anyway, he did say that another record is already in the works and that he may produce and issue his own records from now on. Curious. RS just doesn't like being labeled I guess. Lots of old friends and Richard kooks in the audience, including Sharon my-spell-check is broken Gold, Gene and Isabelle Frey, Jef and Sandy Bernstein and Karen Finkenberg of Finch Mountain House Concerts and Folk Music Society of Huntington fame. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 08:59:40 -0400 From: Jeff Bernstein Subject: Re: [RS] The Island Redux RockinRonD@aol.com wrote: > Then he teased us by beginning "Money for Floods" When I asked him after the show, Richard said it was "Ascent" that he started and abandoned during the encore. I'm not that big of a fan of Money For Floods, but I love Ascent. Ascent is a song that I never heard more than 5 seconds of, for the first couple of months that I owned Blue Divide. It was so slow that I never gave it a chance. After someone posted the lyrics, I went back and actually played it all the way through and I loved it. It's not something you'd break out at a party, but it's a great song. Can we be sure that Richard isn't starting to forget the titles of some of his songs, in addition to some of the lyrics. I could swear it was Money For Floods, and that's what everyone else seems to have thought. I hope that's the case, because otherwise I missed out on hearing one that I've been waiting a long time to hear. Anyway, if Richard says it was Ascent then it must have been Ascent. That's good news for me, because I guess that means there's a chance he'll play it at one of his upcoming shows. It's easy to see how Richard could forget some of the lyrics - he has a lot of songs, and it's a lot to remember, especially when, as John McD mentioned, you're trying to make the sound of two guitars come out of one. Plus, he deals with it with such good humor that it just makes for a more relaxed atmosphere. It was a great show - looking forward to the next one - Carnegie Hall for me, if there are still tickets. He was singing rhe tune live as of last fall. It is a great song. I always really liked the end of the "Blue Divide". To RockinRon: I agree with you that "Vuelta" is the best album of Shindell. It has a few of the best tracks he has ever recorded and every track is good, something that I never felt about the earlier releases (of course, that's just opinion and I also find that it's rare that there are albums where I don't skip tracks). But then again, I think the songs are more subtle than, say Somewhere Near Patterson, which seems to be considered his best. SNP is a very good album but I would not put "Vuelta" above it, not even close. Richard has a bunch of gigs near me in late October so I will probably catch one of those. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 16:50:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Janet Cinelli Subject: [RS] Brokerage! I was there too! I've never seen the place so crowded. Glad for Richard to have such a good turnout, especially on a Wednesday night but it was a little scary being stuck up in a corner, packed in like sardines. I tried to look for you Ron but couldn't see through the crowd! I liked Deportee, he did an awesome job! AYHN had a sad edge to it but I liked it. John McD., were you the one who asked Richard about his tunings? I heard you shout out Famous Blue Raincoat and I shouted it too! Plus Whipporwill and Calling the Moon, none of which he played. A great concert which, unfortunately, I had to duck out before Green Lights, I mean Grey-Green! Who was that lady? Good set with a great opening act, James O'Malley. Seen him a few times and he always puts on a great show! Janet PS Someday I'll be in with the in-crowd and meet up with some fellow listers! ____________________________________________________ Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 20:41:48 -0400 From: Jamie Younghans / John McDonnell Subject: [RS] RE: Brokerage gig Hi all, Didn't mean to leave out RS' opening act, James O'Malley, but I posted right after the show, and it was getting late on a school night. Anyway, he was very impressive--well-crafted songs with an easy playing style that belied its complexity--like someone else we know. He was announced as a local (i.e. Long Island) talent, but I wasn't able to find out where else he's playing. He's really worth a visit.
