I brought my dad with me this time to try to win him over with Richard and I'm happy to say it worked! We got there really early. I wan't sure how seating was there so we figured we'd head down to get there at like 4:30 and learned that most people don't arrive there until only a little before the show. My only complaint was the lovely people who got there well after a bunch of us and proceeded to set their high chairs up right in front of all of us up against the stage and block many of our views. Very frustrating. All was not lost though...we got to watch Richard soundcheck and I was sitting with a stupid grin on my face as I finally got to hear him do 'A Good Year for the Roses", "She Belongs To Me", and an amusing start to "Crimson and Clover" and "Wild Thing" with Lincoln. I honestly wasn't that impressed with Kevin Briady. It was too slow and I was a little bored by his extensive talking. Richards set was wonderful! I was thrilled to hear Abuelita and the Ballad of Mary Magdalene and my Dad was forever won over by Arrowhead and Richards version of America. He even bought a cd which means he really liked him :) I did take some pictures which I'll try to put up somewhere at some point. Hopefully it won't be another year and a half before I see Richard again! - -K ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 11:08:46 EDT From: Patience9@aol.com Subject: [RS] CT Well Bonnie, it seems like Richard will be playing here a lot in the next few months. I have tickets to Northampton the end of Oct, but I think quite a few were with Lucy Kaplanski whom neither of us enjoy. Is anyone going to the Brokerage show tonight? Hope to see some of you there. I'll have tan cargo shorts on and a yellow t-shirt. Anyone know what the place is like? Greg S. It's been over a year since I saw him last, at Falcon Ridge in '04. We are very excited. He will be sharing the bill with Cheryl Wheeler and an opening act, Sonya Kitchell, who I've never heard of. The only other show I had seen was at Joe's Pub, and I found a marked contrast in his demeanor tonight--much more relaxed, more discursive and open, and even the missteps (more below) didn't matter. Is it going too far to say that he's better alone than with a band? The set list was as follows: - --Transit - --Last Fare of the Day - --AYHN (in "Gnostic" Tuning. It was a vaguely dissonant version, and I loved it. However, since he didn't specify whether it was Persian or Syrian Gnosticism, I couldn't tell if he was using a dropped D or not! See below) - --Abuelita - --Fishing - --Deportee (Woody Guthrie cover) - --Che Guevara T-Shirt (he said this was in "full pagan" i.e., DADGAD tuning!) - --Cancillon Sencilla - --Fenario (with props to that Jacobean lunatic, John Donne) - --Big Muddy (I think he should footnote Dick Gaughan on his version, but that's just me) He then pulled out an electric guitar he was given and did - --Reunion Hill - --Sittin on Top of The World (done by The Dead, Howlin' Wolf, Bob Dylan, Cream, and many more) - --Hazel's House He then asked for requests, and received Famous Blue Raincoat (mine), Nora, Mary Magdalene, Wisteria (mine) Arrowhead and "Green Lights" the last of which, he was informed, was on his latest album (she meant "Gray Green"). He did none of the requests. Instead, he started "One Man's Arkansas"--twice--and then abandoned it. The whole atmosphere was so relaxed, it didn't matter, and when he decided on - --"The Next Best Western," he made everybody (or should I say, me) happy. He finished off with "There Goes Mavis" For an Encore (1) He started and abandoned "Money for Floods." I was really disappointed by this, as I love that song, but then he did "Arrowhead." 'Nuff said. He blanked on one verse, but the guitar....he could have been singing the phone book. Encore (2) Cajoled, implored and applauded, he came back and did "Gray Green." All in all, a great gig, and a very relaxed vibe. Talking with Greg S about the show, he told me it was similar to shows at The Point, so I'll try to check that out next time. Anyway, I am now convinced me that I should stop abusing my guitar on the pretense that I am "playing" it. No matter how many posts I read about RS' guitar skills, it didn't hit me until I saw it, up close, when sometimes the sound I heard didn't match what I saw. I sounded like two guitars, but there was only one guy. Amazing. Unless he's Ashlee Simpson.
