My husband and I've performed this song a few times and people really seem to like it. I'm not much of a singer and tell them if they liked our amatuer version they should really listen to the original, which is as perfect as you get! On a more somber note, I hope all our listers on the other side of the pond are all well and haven't been personally affected by today's horror. "Imagine all the people, sharing all the world. You may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us and the world will live as one." HA!!! One of my favorite songs is "Land of the Bottom Line" by John Gorka. I like my work but I find the more I do it the more I like the social work aspect. I get to spend time now and then telling the Yale Law students they just do NOT want to work in a big New York law firm. What is really stunning is how much people have to give up and if not sell their souls, at least lock them up tight in those little boxes with no windows. When it comes to law students they deserve pity because many do this to pay off absolutely insane student loans and then they are stuck and can't get out. Well, enough of a digression, but I cannot begin to tell you how much I related to "Confession"!!! right down to the color of the pill, at one point in time! I didn't think Richard didn't "understand," I thought he totally did! On spirituality: I was attracted to anyone who could actually include in a non'"Christian" song, the very word "sin." (Norah.) Notice also how the first line says it was no sin, they could turn the other cheek and take it on the chin, but the closing line, is simply (or at least in some versions) Norah, there is no sin. However -- and this thread has run in the past-- some are uncomfortable, I am sometimes uncomfortable, with the Christian vocabulary, imagery, and general shorthand, if only because it's a language not all of us can follow and therefore can be excluding. To Richard, it may be shorthand because he thinks everybody knows the stories and the references, but in fact, they don't. That is not to say it isn't a valid use of language, and I *liked* Ulysses! So there is an attractive and repelling aspect to the "spirituality" (another word I don't really like becaues I'm not sure what it is short for. I like that Richard thinks about things deeply and it goes without saying that this includes looking for meaning, not merely having a good time. Is that spirituality?) Oh, but please don't confuse lack of "religious" conviction with lack of conviction. There's plenty to aspire to without god. (Waiting for a rejoinder on semantics.)
