It's now 7.5 years and counting since he came over to Europe (and that was only a few songs as Joan Baez's guest). If you want to put this in context have a look at this archived review of their concert in Bristol (Thanksgiving Day 1997) I only came across him in late '99 after the Cry 3 album so have never had the opportunity to see him play. He has a lot of fans here (including many in this community). gerry Tired of spam? Yahoo! Not that this is any indicator of forthcoming gigs. I live in Baltimore, smack in the middle of the East Coast (at least from my perspective), a major transportation hub, home of my wife's good cooking, site of my charming company, and he hardly ever plays here. I may head down to the gig in VA next November, if he pays for my gas, or I may just stay home and sulk. Haven't made up my mind yet. Major population centers? SDiego (and its rather dead folk scene, right RG?), L.A. (next...), SF/Sacramento, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver. mmm 6 metro areas in, oh, 1400 miles. The Mountain West is not a folk hotbed, 'cept for the college towns. On the other hand, sometimes folk musicians mention they (gratefully) see many of the same audience members from year to year... Be nice if the folk audience out there was a bit more abundant, in the first place. tw in Portland, OR... Well, the first time I ever saw Richard was in Northern California (Santa Rosa, to be exact) when I was visiting a friend and we went to see Dar and Richard opened for her. I came away a shin-head or shindellian or shin-split or whatever we are calling ourselves these days. The song that impressed me the most was Fishing. In June I'll be temporarily relocating to Alaska, where I have a sneaking suspicion Richard plays FAR less frequently than he does California. No matter how hard you work that great northwest folk circuit, I imagine it's a little difficult to end up in the black after that $5,000+ flight from Buenos Aires to Juneau... :) Katie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Apr 2005 10:27:06 EDT From: Patience9@aol.com Subject: [RS] Vance Gilbert And Tracy Grammar will be at the Iron Horse in Northampton as well. They are VIP (front row, or should I say pew) seats, $19 each. I saw Susan Werner at this church a few weeks ago and it is a terrific venue. Let me know. I think Richard is coming here a little less due to his move to Argentina. If he's going to be traveling as much as he does for work, it makes sense that he would go most often to where the most reliable crowds are, not to mention that he used to live on the east coast. I do know that his sister lives in Marin County, unless she has recently moved. A few years ago I saw him at the Freight and a whole row was reserved for family members, as his sister was getting married that weekend. Dar's absence from the bay area has to do with being a new mom I would assume. Aside from these current complaints, I think I live in a pretty good area for folk music. There are a couple of great presenters of folk music right here in my town, not to mention the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, Espresso Gardens in San Jose, Kuumbwa and Rio in Santa Cruz. Boston and its environs are really ground zero for this type of music, but there is a very healthy folk scene throughout the Bay Area and Northern CA. I am on a number of folk artists list and I feel very grateful that I live where I do when people from the middle of the country start talking about the (in)frequency of small folk acts in their local areas. Norman, that is so cool that you were at the dar/richard show in SR, so was I! Peter ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V7 #105 ***********************************
