Got me in the mood for Thursday nights show at The Turning Point - which I will be attending. Anybody else going? Just curious. The Turning Point is THE perfect place to see Richard - very intimate - great sound. Friendly waitresses and club owner type people. Should be good. I saw Susan Werner there a few weeks ago and she was great ( she has very cool new political songs by the way). Those of you who are attending any of The Turning Point shows - you might want to know: the music club is downstairs - and there is a nice restaurant upstairs. If you make dinner reservations upstairs - they let you pick out and reserve the best seats downstairs BEFORE you have dinner. So you end up in the front row ( if you want). If you do that - be sure to get there early enough to have your whole dinner BEFORE Richard's show starts. ( Ask when you make the food reservations). Food is a little bit pricey ($20-25 for an entree? ) - maybe some cheaper things? But it's good. And some of you can probably easily afford it. I will say Hi to you on Thursday if I know you are there. see ya... Bob Paterson. ps - what's this I hear about a new song about Arkansas? Or did I misunderstand? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Apr 2005 07:03:47 -0400 From: Amy Cocuzza Subject: [RS] easy identification I had a similar experience. I was at both Joe's Pub shows - Thursday and Friday - and couldn't find anyone off the list. How do you recognize one another?! This made me think of Moxy Fruvous' Fruheads: they had buttons that they'd wear to shows for easy identification of fellow uber-fans. Perhaps an idea for us? But then what would we call our selves? Shin-heads? Dell-toids? Hmmm, perhaps not. I don't have the wherewithal right now to post any depth of feedback, but a few bits... I agree with most of the list that Billy was a bit over the top on Thursday night. Such a strong musician, but there were several moments when I wanted to charge the stage and forcibly unplug him. Rad, on the other had, really lent to the performance. The last few times I saw Rad with Richard I've thought he showed restraint and musical sensibility. Go figure. Anais was adorable. I thought that she seemed much more confident at the Friday show, and that translated into a much stronger set. But even Thursday's performance impressed me. A very comical moment in the Friday show: In between songs, Richard sort of blanched, waved in front of him, and said something like, "What was that? Did anyone else see that?" I saw nothing, and no one else spoke up, so I yelled out that that was a bad sign. (Richard can breath easy again - my date confessed last night that he'd also seen something, but didn't want to speak up.) I'm fascinated with One Man's Arkansas. Melodically beautiful, rhythmically driving, but I think it really shines lyrically. Once again he's captured such rich, vivid imagery without returning to the wordy complexity of a song like Transit. (I requested it at the Friday show after hearing it Thursday, which seemed to catch him off guard, but I needed to hear it again.) Richard's songwriting seems to have dramatically matured in the last three years or so. I'm starting to believe that he's been chanelling Dave Carter's spirit. My father and his girlfriend are going to this Friday's Turning Point show - his first Richard experience after much prompting and prodding by yours truly. Take good care of him! Okay, enought rambling out of me. Cheers, Amy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Apr 2005 18:38:21 -0500 From: "kunigunda" Subject: Re: [RS] easy identification Shin-heads. I love it! My own idea was Shin-diggers--has that festive connotation--or for the Latin lovers, Shine Qua Nons (yes, I can hear the groans, but stop me before I get to Cardinal Shins (for the seminarians!), or, for the athletic among us, the Shin Splints). My wife suggested we all wear Fleur-de-Lis, but I suspect that will lead to secret handshakes and rituals. Yikes! Also, anyone know if there are any international/European tour dates? Would they be included on the tour schedule here, or would they be separate, or has he ever even done any? Look forward to seeing all you Shin-(insert name here) next time. At Thursday's Joe's Pub show, I got lucky. Everyone I met just happened to be sitting right near me. I asked John McD if he and his wife were Gene and Isabelle. Then I think Gene heard me, because he was right behind me. I like all the suggestions - T-shirts, Fleur-De-Lis, etc., but I'm thinking it's already hard enough for me to get my wife and friends to come to a show with me. I'm trying to imagine what my wife would do if I came downstairs wearing a Che Guevara T-shirt and Fleur-De-Lis! Last Thursday, before leaving work, I was planning to print out all of the msgs people posted saying they'd be at Joe's Pub. I ran out of time, but I did find Bill's and Janet's msgs. I printed them out, but they didn't have enough clues to actually find them. I remembered seeing Amy's posting and Mary McCarthy's posting, but I couldn't find them before I had to leave. At one point during the show, when I was on my way back to my seat, I almost asked a young lady with long brown hair (and not wearing a Che Guevara T-shirt), if her name was Janet, but I chickened out. I've been thinking we could try giving more clues, but it could turn into something like that Seinfeld episode where they're trying to find eachother at the movie theater... "Have you seen a a guy who's about five foot eleven, with a big head and flared nostrils." or "Have you seen a tall, lanky dufus with a bird face, and hair like the bride of Frankenstein." Maybe we should stick to basic descriptions and more detail on what clothes we'll be wearing. I'll be at the Thursday Turning Point show. I'd like to meet whoever might be there. I'll post a msg saying what I'll be wearing. But in case that's not enough, I'll be the medium height, balding, guy, with a big shiny forehead, and long skinny arms. See you there...
