Richard was in fine form at Joe's Pub Thursday night and the house seemed pretty much filled to capacity. Bunch of Listers there as well, including Gene and Isabelle, Greg S. and others. Never did see Janet C. I'm sure one of you guys will report a complete setlist. Great to see Billy Masters and Rad, who really added to the atmosphere of Richard's music. Seeing Billy and his contortionist faces stirred up memories of the Cry3 tour, which seemed like another lifetime ago. Richard did a stirring rendition of "For The Roses," and it was great to hear--a high point to be sure. He also did the new one, "One Man's Arkansas." He declared it a work-in-progress and confessed that he thought "it still needed something" before he would call it finished. To me, it's a cross between "You Stay Here," "Anthem" and a hint of "Fishing" melodically speaking. It's played in DADGAD and Richard Capos the 5th fret. Basic DADGAD chord progression--saw G, Gm, E, and a C in the Bridge. Lots of hammering and ringing on the higher notes. Pretty uptempo, with some very cool picking and a haunting but lovely melody. Definitely needs more listening, but I do think the bridge part needs some work. Classic Richard Funny moment: After he finished playing OMA, some dolt close to the stage volunteered that "it was too serious." "Too serious?," Richard responded incredulously. "You're at the wrong concert my friend." Hysterical. Guess you had to be there. I loved it. And Anais Mittchell, who opened, sounded great--I like her better live than on her CD, which is overwrought with angst-laden lullabyes. But the girl sure can write. She finished with my shouted out request for "Before The Eyes of Story-Telling Girls" that drew extended applause. And deservedly so--an amazing song. She's one to watch. They really know how to make 'em in Vermont. Leaving the 7:30 show, there wasn't much of a line for the 9:30. I hope it ultimately drew a bigger crowd. Surely not the song Joni Mitchell wrote about James Taylor? ...it's got one heck of a lot of complicated lines for Richard to remember...surely there must have been at least one 'Sonora' moment? gerry __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? It was written by Jerry Chesnut, and made famous by George Jones. For what it's worth, however, I did have some problems: the venue, while intimate, did give us the bum's rush at the end. My wife and I were having a great conversation with Greg S., but we were told (albeit politely) to tell our stories walking. Growing up in Ireland, where folk music gigs are somewhat "organic," for want of a better term, the feeling of being pushed out for the next shift was very discomfiting. This is not to say that it wasn't a great show--it was, but it was too short, and we didn't really have a chance to savor it through reflection or interaction. Maybe it was because it was our first RS show. You who are long time RS and Cry3 fans may have liked Billy Masters, but, quite frankly, I thought he was awful. He added nothing to the already full sound provided by RS and the piano, he clearly was not familiar with many of the songs, and he completely messed up "Big Muddy." (my current favorite). I'm all for going with the flow, but I thought he was completely superfluous. Did anyone else dislike the George Jones song, "Good Year for the Roses."? I hated that song when GJ did it, I hated it when Elvis Costello did it (on Almost Blue), and RS--despite a valiant effort--did nothing to change my mind. I know what you're thinking: first George Jones, then Elvis Costello, now Richard Shindell--they all like it, but I know what I'm talking about, right? Anyway, it was a great show. I was hoping he would do AYHN, which you stalwart fans have heard enough, but his set was excellent. As for Anais Mitchell--she was just great. What a talented songwriter--we may even try to see her tomorrow out in Long Island. Hope the 9:30 show tonight was fun. As a backup playing with Richard (or anyone) on stage, I can take him or leave him. I'm also of the "less is more" when it comes to Richard and Dar, though I make an exception for Larry Campbell. Larry and only Larry backing Richard is ideal. On the other hand, Billy has made some great additions on their recordings. One example is Cold Missouri Waters, especially the helicopter sound after "feel the tap upon your leg that tells you go". I also liked what he did for Dar's O Canada Girls.
