Any lyrics, the storyline, > the > vibe, pacing, anything . . . The song describes a meeting between a group of people and one other important person, and as the verses progress it is revealed (in typical Shindell fashion) that the people are residents of a rural town that the government wants to build a highway through. The refrain refers to each of the people trying to figure out "just what they saw" (quotations for paraphrasing, not for exact quotes) occur. Not sure if the thing that was seen was the meeting itself or something that happened during the meeting; the song is incomplete, and there may be more to come that develops the meeting further. (Although the incompleteness could also refer to roughness in the lyrics rather than to missing lyrics.) Richard said that his primary objection to the song was its linear nature; he seemed to want it to be less straighforward. In terms of vibe and pacing, the song had a strong guitar drive to it, powerful yet not overwhelming, and the lyrics were delivered with grit and intensity (not too heavy, though). It kind of reminded me of a blend between Fishing and Waiting for the Storm, in terms of the relationship between lyrics and guitar; less heavy and overwhelming than Fishing, more rigid and somber than Waiting. If that makes sense. (It doesn't actually *sound* like either of those songs, of course; it just reminds me of them in this one particular sense.) - -- > "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). Someone should be keeping score on how MANY different "true stories" there are for this song......... I must say the "daycare worker" idea is a brand-new one for me. And I wonder whether this one is just his particular favorite song to invent alternative stories for, or whether he does this with all the songs? When I think on the other songs about which he tells "Background" those seem somewhat more consistent. Of course the stories might all be true (about AYHN) in pieces. It was funny as hell, though, as was the accompanying description of how he found solace in transferring the guilt for having no candy from himself to the day-care worker, who of course was blameless (and with whom he was getting along fine up until he wrote the song, if his story is to be believed). --Chris - -- > "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). Well, there was the elapsed time display. Kinda boring beat - nothing you could dance to.
