The entire (it appears) Fast Folk collection has been made available on-line, for purchase as whole albums, or track-by-track. You can go to this URL, and use the Search function: http://www.smithsonianglobalsound.org/ There are eight Shindell tracks available, including: On A Sea of Fleur-de-Lis The Courier Are You Happy Now A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress May Sparrows Point The Next Best Western Memory of You Even here, I can't get 'The Weather' live. Oh well. The Courier is actually listed twice, but I think it's the same song on two different albums. I have heard all of these, and the two that are especially distinctive are May, which features very different instrumentation and a missing verse, (sort of - see below) and Fleur-de-Lis, which has a very different pace and sound. I love this version of May; Isabel doesn't think much of it. In any case, the songs are available for $1.49 each, and you can play samples before buying. There are lots of other great musicians out there to check out, but there are dozens of albums and hundreds of tracks, so don't start this before bedtime or you may end up missing a whole night's sleep. OK, May. I know we've done this a while ago, but it has been quite a while. The second (or third, depending how you feel about these things) verse, as recorded on Reunion Hill, goes: I'm calling from some booth And no, I can't come home This is not goodbye I love you more than life On this one, the verse is split, and four additional lines inserted: I'm calling from some booth And no, I can't come home They'll be watching you Do not trust the phone Please, May, do not cry All will be all right This is not goodbye I love you more than life I think I like it a bit better, but for whatever reason it didn't make the cut. Perhaps it's just that I like to hear as much Shindell as possible, so I naturally prefer the longer songs, the added verses, etc. Gene F. (who hopes to see a bunch of you at the April 7 Joe's Pub show, so I have witnesses from this group when Richard finally plays 'The Weather.') ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Mar 2005 22:10:02 -0500 From: Jamie Younghans / John McDonnell Subject: [RS] RE: shindell-list-digest V7 #76 Interesting biographical interpretation. I usually steer clear of this approach (we know he's never been a trucker, for example), but in this case it seems apropos. Thanks.
