Smith" Subject: [RS] Transit and Sister Maria I've been listening to this song a lot lately, probably because I have a new job and have to endure a horrible commute in the evening. Anyway, if I recall correctly it's been discussed here before by people who hear and interpret it differently than I. If you know this song, how do you interpret this line: "Sister Maria, her soul like a prism for the light of forgiveness on all of their faces"? It seems to me that others here have interpreted it as describing the light that comes in through the heavens, through Sister Maria, toward the men in the choir. I've always thought it was the opposite: that the light of forgiveness is coming through the men in the choir, and is refracted through Sister Maria. The contrast between the hostility emanating through the commuters and the forgiveness emanating through the prisoners seems to me like one of those delicious ironies that makes us all so fond of Mr. Shindell's lyrics. Am I alone in this interpretation? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Mar 2005 20:55:53 -0500 From: Ron Alderfer Subject: [RS] Transit and Sister Maria Ooh, Sandra...I couldn't resist this one..."Transit" is one of my all-time favs.... A prism scatters light, no? If you take the entire verse together, the vision I get is that the life, the work - the "soul" - of Sister Maria has scattered the "light" of forgiveness to all of these men. That "light" now shows on their faces as they gather and sing together. Sister Maria has released their souls in a sense...opening them up to eternity, to hope. The light she scattered is now returned in this scene of the collective gathering of prisoners. The "angry old sun" blinds the raging road warriors, but seems a peaceful warmth as it sets and shines through the bars of the prison. The contrasts in this song are many, and profound. It must have been a very old interview as Richard speaks of and plays his newest song, "Reunion Hill"! He also played "Arrowhead" right after that and then the concert/interview ended abruptly. I wish I had a copy of this because it was a really beautiful rendition of both songs.
