Tomorrow is my son Calvin's 1st birthday. In honor of his big day I thought I would try to start a conversation about the top children's music albums of all time. Now, that is not to say that they have to be albums of music specifically written for children like The Lion King or Jungle Book. They could be albums intended for adult consumption that have a feel that just works for playing to your children. I'm interested in hearing what your favorite albums are that you love to play for your children. The album I play most often for my son is Simon and Garfunkle's Greatest Hits. The first lyrics on the album are "De de dede dede dede dede dede deeee..... Do Do dodo dodo dodo dooo". How perfect is that for children's music. They're actually singing in Calvin's language! He can figure out what Cecelia is about when he's in college. For now, it's perfect. I can't wait to hear what your favorites are. I think that my musical taste today has a lot to do with the music that I grew up listening to that my parents played. John Denver, George Winston, Elton John, The Beatles, Crosby Stills and Nash. Even today listening to these artists music makes wherever I happen to be feel like home. I want my son to feel the same way about the music that he remembers from his childhood. Bill PS - Specific song suggestions would be great too ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2005 17:48:41 -0500 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] Kids music Hey you guys, Bill, one recent CD that might be fun is by Nerissa and Katrina Nields, called Songs For Amelia. I have heard several of the songs at shows, and they are very cute. The songs were wwritten for Katrina's daughter. The Enemy Pants is a personal favorite. You can get it at www.bulletproofstore.com. I actually don't have that album yet (but I plan to get it) but have heard many of the songs in Nields shows. "The Enemy Called Pants" in particular is great-- Gilbert and Sullivan would be proud. Songs about kids and parents: Richard's Castaway. Richard's Gray Green John Gorka's Cypress Trees (On After Yesterday-- actually get that whole album) Dar's The One Who Knows (on The Beauty of the Rain). Dee Cartsensen's Farewell, With Love (On The Map-- for the child she never had) John Lennon's Beautiful Boy (On that Yoko Ono album Double Fantansy) Paul Simon's St Judy's Comet (On There Goes Rhymin' Simon) Norman ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2005 20:49:26 -0500 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: Re: [RS] Tunes for Tots And at the risk of drawing the derision of my fellow folkies: Billy Joel's "Goodnight, My Angel" Goodnight, my angel Time to close your eyes And save these questions for another day I think I know what you've been asking me I think you know what I've been trying to say I promised I would never leave you And you should always know Wherever you may go No matter where you are I never will be far away Goodnight, my angel Now it's time to sleep And still so many things I want to say Remember all the songs you sang for me When we went sailing on an emerald bay And like a boat out on the ocean I'm rocking you to sleep The water's dark And deep inside this ancient heart You'll always be a part of me Goodnight, my angel Now it's time to dream And dream how wonderful your life will be Someday your child may cry And if you sing this lullabye Then in your heart There will always be a part of me Someday we'll all be gone But lullabyes go on and on... They never die That's how you And I Will be ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2005 20:36:37 -0500 From: "Donna Myers" Subject: [RS] Kids music Hey Bill, listen to what you like! Kids tend to listen to the same songs over and over again. My boys love Richard's "Are You Happy Now", "Next Best Western" and "Kenworth of My Dreams" to name a few. They also love Lucy Kaplansky's albums and Dave and Tracy's. They have become huge Kennedy's fans since Falcon Ridge too!! They are 11 and 9 now but have been listening ever since they were toddlers. Have fun and Happy Birthday to Calvin!! (Vivid memories of dancing with baby to Tzena, tzena -- I think it is). The 15 year old has them right next to (nowadays) Hilary Duff. Turns out she even likes one of my Silvio Rodriguez CDs too ! (and Collective SOul -- possibilities, possibilities) but I digress. My son and I cut the rug, as they once said, to the Kennedys, also. the first CD. But the CD we have been playing pretty much EVERY NIGHT FOR AT LEAST 9 YEARS is Kim Robertson's Celtic Christmas. Anything Kim Robertson, in fact. Heavenly harps. Known in our house as the "sleepy music." The Celtic Christmas CDs were on a small label -- apparently they said "what would you like to play" and she just sat down and played these tunes. I know for a fact you can eventuallyfind this on ebay, as I bought a second backup copy. Her versions of "I wonder as I wander" and "Sheep may safely graze" are exquisite. My son spent his time in utero listening to the songs of "Sparrow's Point," but he didn't really have a choice, did he.
