Even if she was a bonafide "superstar", a contention that is arguable either way, she was one artist. There were no other "folksingers" that I can think of that achieved that status. But I've been wrong before! When someone uses the word "superstar" I think of big commercial success for a fairly prolonged period of time, not one LP or single, and they need to be in the general public's consciousness. Unfortunately, too many folk artists get overlooked, no matter what era they are from. Peter returns the favour later on the Redbird CD by covering Kris' Lullaby 101. I still prefer the original versions (Peter's Ithaca on the Glencree CD; the new Mrs Foucault's Lullaby 101 on the equally essential Five Stories), but I guess I did hear them that way round first. Had I come across Redbird before, it might've been different (the Calling The Moon Syndrome, as it's known around these parts). > and...i agree that Peter Mulvey's version of the Ocean > is amazing! and is more of an interpretation than a > cover...his version sounds SO ANGRY and bitter to me - > i LOVE it! Then again, Dar's original just doesn't do it for me these days now I've been exposed to Peter's version! Go figure! Unfortunately, details which were with = me for about 24 hours after the show have flown so certain special = tidbits will be missing.=20 First, the venue was a small church, and there wasn't a bad seat in the = 140 there. We arrive early and were in the first row center behind the = members reserved rows, but it wouldn't really have mattered if we'd been = in the back. Sold out of course. Singer/songwriter Anne Heaton opened for Richard and I was pleasantly = surprised. She plays the keyboards accompanied by partner Frank Marrota = Jr on vocals and guitar. She reminds me a bit of Ricky Lee Jones, Laura = Nyro, and Tori Amos rolled into one. You can go here to listen to some = of her songs. http://www.anneheaton.com/music.html I don't think I'm going to be able to remember all the songs Richard = sang, let alone their order. I was enjoying the show too, too much to = take notes. Suffice it to say that R played for about 1.5 hrs. Not long = enough of course. He was very talkative and animated throughout; much = more so than the concert in Chicago I attended back in November. This = was the last gig of this tour so perhaps that had something to do with = it. Let's see, I remember Richard introducing Mavis. He described the = goings on in the song in detail making no mention of the fact that the = song really wasn't about a canary. Had I been hearing it for the first = time I would have been inclined to interpret it literally based on R's = intro. Lister Dave H mentioned R did a song with Tim O'Brien in St. = Louis. Well, Richard went on and on about this and how thrilled and = priviledged he was to have sung with him. Said he was in heaven, and = that it was the highlight of the tour for him. I believe he then sang it = for us. I recognized it, it's an old song, maybe country roots, but I = can't remember the name of it either. R did pretty well with remembering = lyrics. I caught a few pauses but not sure everyone else did. He did = have to come to a halt when singing RU Happy, and asked the audience = what was next. After everyone shouting out and R saying "no that's not = right, is it?", he thought about it and said, "oh yeh, that's right" and = then continued.=20 Some of the songs he sang (in no particular order): Fenario, Waist Deep, = Island, Che Guevara, Cancion, Mavis, Whipporwill (w/ extra verse), Last = Fare, (all but 2 off Vuelta). And....Mary Mag, Lazy, Next Best Western, = Transit, R U Happy Now, You Stay Here ( I think), and several others. = I've been trying to catch up on reading posts and with all the songs = being mentioned I'm getting confused. Songs he didn't sing that I = requested were Reunion Hill, Abuelita, Grey Green. Phooey! One more thing....for all those who are still with me. I did meet a = couple of lister lurkers...so hi again to them. And, not only did I run = into and say hi to Richard before the show, I purchased a cd and hung = around to get it autographed afterwards. (Corny, I know). While = standing there a West Side Folk photographer took my pic w/ R. I'm not = gonna mention that I begged him to. What a sweetie Richard was to put up = with me. Anyway, in an attempt to gain status with the listers (lol), = I'm gonna do what I normally would not do, and that is post or attach a = photo of me and R even though it is a rather hideous shot of me. I've = cropped it and lightened it a bit but to no avail. I suppose I need to = remember that I am probably the most senior lister and old enough to be = Richard's mother! Sigh. So all, eat your hearts out!=20 Carrie in KC P.S. Ron - not sure how to send pics so will attach. Let me know if = there is a better way. Thanks. Yes, I was ignorant as to whether Pete Seeger had served in the military. That's why I asked the question. Thanks for the information. Also, yes it is possible that a Captain could be in charge or take charge of a platoon. Infact Captains are in charge of several platoons within their companies. But the Lieutenant, at least a good Lieutenant, should have been the one to say to the Captain "Why The F are we crossing at this point". I suppose the "Sargeant" in the song could have been the 1st Sargeant and then it would make sense. Hey, if someone else can be anal about phone boxes instead of phone booths (and they were absolutely right about that one) then I can have my little pet peeve also.
