I have to think on the rest. Uhm..... Ani Difranco. Also, back in the days of prior generations the artists you speak of were in the center of popular culture, some of them were semi-superstars. Folk/political/radical artist have now been pushed into the underground - there are many around, but nobody knows them. Ani Difranco (and Dar and Richard I guess) just magically were able to escape such oblivion. Anyway, maybe I'm wrong. Baez, yes, but mostly in her later years and through her association with Dylan. Andersen, Ochs, no. Seeger was branded a communist (I may have some of tese details wrong, as the late 50's/early 60s were a little before my time in terms of folk music consciousness), as were the rest of the Weavers, so he was hardly a star. In the 60s, folk music enjoyed a brief period of popularity that was eradicated by the Beatles and British invasion. I don't think that you can characterize that period as anything more than a blip ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2005 06:09:11 -0800 (PST) From: Christy Thomas Subject: [RS] 4 folksongs I sent some suggestions off-list but wanted to make a comment or two... Mark mentioned Redbird's "Ithaca" - i was completely obsessed with this song when i first got this album - i mean obsessed ! it is a beautiful song and Kris Delmhorst does such a lovely job with. I noticed, though, that Peter Mulvey wrote it - wonder what his version would sound like...anyone heard it? maybe even though he wrote it he feels kris owns it - she certainly NAILED it on Redbird... and...i agree that Peter Mulvey's version of the Ocean is amazing! and is more of an interpretation than a cover...his version sounds SO ANGRY and bitter to me - i LOVE it! and finally, before i duck back into the darkness of lurkerhood...i, too, love The Weather and have wished every single time i've seen Richard that he would sing it...obviously to no avail... Peace, christy in san antonio, texas who is sad Richard isn't going to be in Austin but who will do her best to get to Houston for that show... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Gene, did you say "The We-ther"? You know the very mention of same usually throws the list into cyberentropy. Actually, it's a great song and in all seriousness you deserve to have RS sing it on your birthday. And time's too short to sit and whine About all this dreary weather Bart Who really does like "TV Light" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Feb 2005 13:08:18 -0500 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] Pete, and Re-Pete Hey you guys, Peter Mulvey's Ten Thousand Mornings has been recommended here, and I heartily concur. As many of you remember, Peter shared a sampler CD with Richard in 2000, featuring three songs from Somewhere Near Paterson, and three from Peter's The Trouble With Poets. Back to Ten Thousand Mornings - Back around May 15, 2003, as part of a 'creepy songs' thread we discussed Randy Newman's 'In Germany Before The War,' which Peter covers on this CD. It is an excellent version, and I like it a lot more than the original. It always brings to mind Richard's 'By Now' and Lyle Lovett's 'Pontiac' as creepy songs featuring older gentlemen and younger women. Douglas" Subject: RE: [RS] 4 folksongs Christy, It's good to see some of the DonCon folks spread out in other places. Peter's version of 'Ithaca' is actually on "Glencree," which is again available from the younghunter website. This is the live album recorded in Ireland on which he also has his version of Hizzoner's 'Brand New '64 Dodge.' To speak to the recording of "Ten Thousand Mornings," Peter's dvd "On The Way..." has some footage of him doing the subway recordings, and the live version of "The Ocean" on the dvd, done at the Somerville theater, doesn't sound quite as upfront as the album version. He backs off a bit on the 'bludgeoned the sailers and spat out their keepsakes' lines, but it's still fairly venomous at that juncture; but I wouldn't call the song an overall angry song...maybe a bit vehement, but it's more joyous than angry: there's always continuation, and regrowth. And then to speak to Richard (his list, after all), are there plans for a Shindell dvd in the works, or being discussed? Mulvey's is great, and Ellis has one, and Vance Gilbert has one now, and Greg Brown included one with a cd as did Patty Griffin... Anyone know? Any video plans? I never missed a show of his there at the good old Rosebud, or at Thursdays in Bridgewater. _____________ Tom Huot tjhuot@comcast.net I've actually heard him do it twice that I can recall. He did it at Joe's Pub in November, and again in Pittsburgh on the 28th. I *think* I heard him do it once before November, too, but I'm not sure. It's definitely a concert rarity, though. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V7 #46 **********************************
