To me that is the most forgettable song (or one I'd most like to forget). Maybe it's a guy thing. As in "I'll do the dishes in the morning/this time I swear I won't forget." Probably my anti-TV prejudice. << Hee hee. I swear to god, as soon as I saw Tom mention "TV Light," I just KNEW Lisa was going to chime in, since she's a long-time "TV Light" hater, although I thought it was more beause of the pedal steel and the "country" feeling. For me, easily the most overlooked is "I Saw My Youth Today." Always loved the way it can be about his youth (as in his child) or his OWN youth. "Smiling," for me, is a song I overlook intentionally, since it's easily the most awful song Richard's ever written. The album came out in 1997 and I STILL haven't been able to listen to that song all the way though, honest engine. But I am afraid most of the list just isn't reading it while we wait for lost from the left to realize they lost again. I thought I joined the Shindell list a week ago so that I could post about the terrific show he did in Pittsburgh on Jan. 28. I put quite a bit of time and effort into keeping a setlist and writing a review. It would be nice if more than one person had acknowledged it, but instead there's been days worth of political stuff....and I'm wondering if I'm on the Richard Shindell music list. Can we PLEASE talk about what binds us together and not what tears us apart? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2005 10:31:12 -0600 From: "kunigunda" Subject: Re: [RS] Re: St. Louis Just fyi - Richard is on his way to Buenos Aires today. I certainly have some RS songs that I could give or take, but "awful"? Maybe I'd better listen more closely. Then again, that's the great thing about music in general - the music, the lyrics, the tone - all affect people differently. At least, the good ones do. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2005 10:41:11 -0800 (PST) From: adam plunkett Subject: Re: [RS] overlooked song By album, most overlooked in my opinion: Sparrow's Point: title track. I once heard him sing it live. Absolutely love the song and the musical choices. Blue Divide: Ascent. I know the song's depressing and all but I find it very chilling. Reunuon Hill: I Saw My Youth Today. One of my favorite RS songs though I must be alone in that feeling as he never plays it (told me once he never plays it), and do not remember it being talked about. Somewhere Near Patterson: Calling the Moon. Ok so yeah its not an orginal but all the tracks I really like here are sung fairly often (Abuelta, Wisteria, Transit, etc). Vuelta: Its new-ish so its hard to do but I will go with Gray Green. I love Che Guevera, Fast Fare, So Says, and Mavis the most but those are concert staples. I find Grey Green beautiful and a great pairing with Last Fare. (Fare ends with a birth and Gray Green just blends into it thematically I think). To the new member who posted the review. I did not post but I want you to know I enjoyed your review very much. I just didn't have time to post. Sometimes people get veered away from posting about shows. Sometimes its politics, other times, if you see a show near the end of the tour, people dont respond as much either due to past reviews. But it was appreciated from me. - --- Ron Alderfer wrote: > "Smiling," for me, is a song I overlook > intentionally, since it's easily > the > most awful song Richard's ever written. Then again, that's the great thing about music in general - the music, the lyrics, the tone - all affect people differently. At least, the good ones do. << Well, yeah, maybe "awful" was a bit harsh. But while I don't always like the music, the lyrics AND the tone in every Richard song, in "Smiling," I don't really like any of the three. And, in the real litmus test for "How much does RG like any given song?" -- whether it makes me want to pick up my guitar and play it and/or transcribe it -- "Smiling" doesn't come close. Still and all, for the most part, I'd still take the worst thing Richard might ever write over the best thing just about anyone else might write. RG ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Feb 2005 14:02:46 -0500 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] Most overlooked RS song Hey you guys, At this point, Pat P, Ron G, Vanessa, Susan, and a few other old friends may feel free to leave the room. You've all heard this before. The most overlooked Richard Shindell song is..... The Weather. OK, admittedly this may not his best song, but I like it a lot, and Richard has abandoned this song like the Colts abandoned Baltimore. I guess that from 1997 thru 1999 I heard this song on WFUV more than any other Richard tune except, maybe, Are You Happy Now. Yet, we have seen Richard live almost forty times, and not once have we seen him perform this song. We've seen Pat Power play it at Camp Dar. We've had Ron Greitzer play it for us, and thirty of our closest friends, at the House Concert we hosted last February. But not Richard. Now, I'm just mentioning this, but we will be seeing Richard at Joe's Pub on April 7. That's my birthday. Honest, it is. My 47th, in case you were wondering. Not that I think he'd actually play it. I'm just saying.... Gene F. (who has stooped lower before in the never-ending quest to hear Richard play 'The Weather' live. Not much lower, but lower. At least, I think I have. Maybe not.) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2005 11:53:37 -0000 From: "Dave McKay" Subject: [RS] Point Of Order Whatever the rights and wrongs of the current discussion, can certain people please stop lazily quoting entire messages when replying to them? I would say "Castaway". And "Paddy's Green Shamrock shore" due to the guitar work. Subject: [RS] Most overlooked RS song? I would like to hear nominations for the most overlooked RS song. You know, a song that you may have heard a thousand times, and suddenly it registers, and you say "Wow. Why didn't I pay attention to this before?". I'll nominate two from Reunion Hill: "May" and "Smiling". Ron A ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V7 #43 **********************************
