I thought I joined the Shindell list a week ago so that I could post about the terrific show he did in Pittsburgh on Jan. 28. I put quite a bit of time and effort into keeping a setlist and writing a review. It would be nice if more than one person had acknowledged it, but instead there's been days worth of political stuff....and I'm wondering if I'm on the Richard Shindell music list. Can we PLEASE talk about what binds us together and not what tears us apart? I'm happy to know there are a few cool heads out there. Some of these posts are straying off base and sound downright angry. I hope Richard doesn't see this stuff. That said, did anyone go to the folk festival in St. Louis last night? Just wondering how it went. Tonight's my long awaited performance in Lawrence!!!! Somebody needs thicker skin.... >Did you happen to notice the miles of people lined up to vote? Yes, Shiites, the vast majority. It's already cnceded that by and large the Sunii boycotted the election. Now I am the first to admit I am ignorant about Islamic sects and I do not want to generalize about these particular Shiites, much less the admittedly brave individuals who did go out to vote. But you may sing a different tune if we end up with an Ayatollah-run state and an oppressed Sunii minority. Back to the head in the sand. I haven't watched much news since November and boy, how much happier I am on a daily basis! I figure the only real change is going to come with a political personnel change so give me a call when we have the Congressional elections. But heck, here I am in the only political forum I've been speaking to so I'll present my theory of the democratic problem, at least on the domestic front. I am still stunned by the "values" reason people gave for voting Red. (side note: isn't it cute how "red" now has a totally different meaning...) I believe it. If you consider what pictures each side has painted. Democrat: you "deserve" better health care. You "deserve" better Social Security. "We" will give it to you. "They" don't want to help you. "You" are weaker and more oppressed than you used to be. Republican: it's a tough real world out there. Real Men go out and fight for their families. Real men don't whine about what they deserve and beg for it, they work hard. The Dems come off as whiners, the Republicans as fighters. The democrat looks in teh mirror and sees a homeless guy with a cup. The republican looks in the mirror and sees the Noble Pioneers, the Homesteader, the Cowboy. Which picture looks better? People like other people who make them like themselves. The Republicans make people identify with them and like what they see. The point is that the Democrats have to reclaim the imagery and the virtues. Taxes aren't about "them" taking from "us," they are about communities pitching in to share risks and meet common goals. The safety net, the fabric of social services, the (eventual) universal health care (after all Medicare is universal health care for the 65+ and disabled), are neither something imposed nor something handed out. These things are the product of American workers joining hands to share the risk of bad luck and to help EACH OTHER, not "them," out. Anyway ........................... so maybe the point is "we" have to stop raging at the machine and keep talking, talking, talking up what we DO believe in and why it makes so much more sense and is what America is all about. Sorry if I sound like John Edwards:) as I don't think that helped much.... but maybe it is just that "they" did the better job at painting pictures, not that he was necessarily wrong. I have been begging Scott and Richard's management to get Richard to Austin soon for the past 2 years. I think I might have pissed him off by my views on the list :) He ain't coming to Austin. He'll be in Houston which is close enough. I'll show him. I be there clapping like an idiot to an amazing voice, incredible guitar work and beautiful lyrics I completely disagree with. >------------------------------ > >Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2005 01:11:10 -0600 >From: "Mark A.
