I too found the site of all those Iraiq men and women voting for the first time very inspiring. At least I think I did. I am troubled by the fact that the ballot they used to vote apparently has no names ( or maybe a few names of the people at the very tip top of each party). What kind of election is it where the names and identities of the people you are voting for are secret? Somehow - my expectation is that the people who win the free and open election are gonna be the same people who support the United States and their ( our - I am an American) invasion of Iraq. I want good things to happen in Iraq from now into the future. Please God work some miracle and see to it that the people who end up in power in Iraq are actually people with good hearts who will build a new nation where freedom and democracy are more than just PR slogans. And - as long as I have your attention God - do me one favor? Whatever else happens - please make sure that the United States doesn't end up building up a new army in Iraq - and then leaving - and then have some new despot ( who has the loyalty of the army) take over. Cause that's what I am afraid will happen. Everytime I see Iraq on the television I can't help hearing The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" in the back of my mind. "Meet the new boss - same as the old boss." .................................................... For those of you who get this list stuff email-by-email: Nanci Griffith will be at the Borders at Columbus Circle at 7pm doing a rare in-store in support of her BRAND NEW CD "Hearts in Mind" today Wednesday feb 2 2005 Also - check her out on Letterman on Friday night. Letterman is a Nanci Griffith fan too. Cash money says many people on this list love Nanci too. Wonder if Nanci is a Richard Shindell fan? Perhaps I will ask her if I get the chance. Nanci is a big Dar Williams fan - how could she not be a Richard fan? see ya... bob paterson ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2005 6:41:46 -0600 From: Subject: Re: [RS] freedom's just another word .... or waist deep boys... the captain drowns.... I cannot STAND GW, anything he stands for or does. I wouldn't watch the State of the Onion :-) address for anything tonight. I totally agree that not all the conditions were met for a fair election. However, I have to applaude the personal bravery of the people who went to the polls at HUGE personal risk, and walked around showing off their "inked" fingers. It might not be perfect, but what is important is that there are Iraqis who care enough to lay it on the line for their rights. Maybe I am naive, but I choose to believe that this is a step in the right direction. I also believe that there were and are, other more effective ways to get there than decimating a nation and it's people while costing many non-Iraqi lives. My 2 cents.
