"Some of my best friends are Republicans," or at least, some people I think of as honorable and good-hearted but perhaps not quite imaginative enough or smart enough :) :) :)....... My sister's great discovery from her more seriously activist youth is that sometimes high-minded ideology has no correlation with personal integrity or compassion. I could go on with boring family stories to support this theory. My own is that we don't teach enough imaginative thinking in school and that perfectly nice well-intentioned people grow up to be Republicans because they can't imagine that everyone else won't just naturally be as kind and personally repsonsible as they are. (SOME.) Trouble is that the rest of the world sometimes pays for this mistake... Guys, I used to be on the Al Stewart list and we should be so lucky as to have Jason here instead of the vitriol I used to endure there. So listen to the tone and not the words. Much like the way I have to listen to Spanish music :) Christmas songs. > Norah. The song for those who are in more of a wrist-slitting mood at Christmas. and I believe he has a song called "Love, Before you go," that is supposedly a nativity song. I have been so awash in other music I suddenly cannot remember if this is actually recorded somewhere or not! How embarassing! (thanks, someone, it is on the Wonderland CD and I guess I must not have been crazy about the rest of it. Lisa Davis ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Dec 2004 18:31:35 -0800 (PST) From: Christy Thomas Subject: [RS] Statistical Sampling Joe, I was sort of exaggerating to make a point...I understand the concept of statistical sampling...these data, however, provided no information on the number of people tested, how they were selected, etc...and given that no information was provided...even my undergrad stats students wouldn't have "bought" that data... In addition, it is not exactly clear what IQ test was used (if any) - they mention Raven's something...but the only test I know of that is Raven's is the progressive matrices. I googled their "test" and got nothing....if it was a test developed in another country odds are quite high that it was not normed in this country - making interpretation quite "iffy" at best. I suspect the results weren't really based on anything...as this has been revealed to be a hoax. christy Christy, The results were based on statistically sampling. In that great little store in New Haven, "Group W Bench" (you had better know that reference unless you are Vanessa's age :)) overheard by a youth asking the store clerk about a triangular ashtray with Che's picture in the corner: "who's that guy?" The answer "oh, he was a Cuban revolutionary, a friend of Fidel Castro before the revolution" generates silence. Has anyone seen the Motorcycle Diaries? Meanwhile I just finished a book by Andrei Codrescu called "Ay, Cuba" in which he reveals an item that I did not know if it is true which is that during the Cuban Missile crisis Che was bummed that the Russians did NOT bomb us into the stone age. Well, look what happened to Wordsworth when he got old. Nobody is perfect. I would be glad to have verification or contradiction on this point, however. And with yet another fruitless attempt to link Richard's music with the Cuban Silvio Rodriguez to whom I am now hopelessly addicted and of whose music I will make a sampler for ANYONE interested (ESPECIALLY a fluent speaker/listener of Spanish!): I have in my possession a Young/Hunter showcase CD "in association with Signature sounds," called Che' Lives with Richard and Dar doing the Ballad of Mary Magdalene(special performance Chris Smither); whereas Silvio's song to Che called "Hombre" is on one of his gorgeous CD "Silvio" as well as presumably on assorted Che tribute CS in Spanish if you go hunting on e-bay.
