Well, after not being able to check my e-mail for a couple of months, I just read through most of the list posts since early October. I thought I would comment on a few of the posts I read, answer some of the questions which were asked, and ultimately represent the shindelllist dissenting opinion. The last time I posted something political I was swatted on the hand by the list manager, but it appears that the gloves are off of the lists liberal majority so I might as well write a few words as well. - -First off, I'll stay on list topic for a second. Still no Colorado show dates? Richard, perhaps if you toured "Red" states more often and enlightened us cave dwellers we would have voted differently. - - Someone asked to list 3 reasons to have voted for Bush - 1. With Bush as commander-in-chief, the American military and our allies have removed probably the 2 most evil dictatorial regimes of the 1990s-2000s. Something like 47 million people in Afghanistan and Iraq breath freer air today because of decisions make by GWB. I for one am happy that Afghani women aren't subject to beatings for leaving their homes without a male relative. I'm also happy that Uday is no longer feeding men he doesn't like to his tiger. 2. Bush will appoint Supreme Court Justices and federal judges who will interpret law rather than those who attempt to create laws which suit their personal sensibilities. Congress writes law and the courts interpret them -- The US Constitution. 3. The Bush administration increased federal funding for education by 50% (I know, I know, not fully funded, but still increased significantly. There is a war on so priorities had to be re-evaluated). The Administration increased funding for Aids in Africa by 3 times what the Clinton Administration had alloted. - -Someone was worried about the draft being reinstated- It's not going to happen. The military functions quite well as an all volunteer force. The last thing military men and women want is to be in a foxhole with people who have to be forced to stand up and serve their country. Incidentally, Rep Charles Rangle (D-New York) is the guy that most recently introduced a bill in congress to re-instate the draft. For those of you who are genuinely concerned about this, I strongly encourage you to join your fellow listies looking to move to and apply for citizenship in Canada. My wife is Canadian and for what I know, they are genuinely wonderful people. I'm not saying this to be a smart*ss. I really think that if you think your country has changed so much for the worse that there is no place for you here, that there are other options for you and that Canada will certainly be more to your political liking. I would absolutely respect someone moving there for that reason. - - Oh, back on topic, I finally just bought Shindell's new CD. It's slowly growing on me much like some songs from Somewhere Near Patterson eventually did. I really like Che-G Tshirt, but I fear I feel less sorry for the stow-away than most of y'all. To quote Dennis Leary "Life Sucks, get a helmet". No sympathy for bad luck brought on by communist support. And is it just me or does So Says The Whipper-will sound a lot like a morph of The Weather and Song For Nowhere? Very pretty song, or songs, all three. Peace, Bill ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Nov 2004 14:21:52 -0800 (PST) From: Christy Thomas Subject: [RS] politics - OFF TOPIC! just wanted to warn any of you who want to stay away from this discussion - HIT DELETE NOW! for the rest of you who can still tolerate political speak --- Bill stepped into the political discussion with a very thoughtful response - including the following - "2. Bush will appoint Supreme Court Justices and federal judges who will interpret law rather than those who attempt to create laws which suit their personal sensibilities. Congress writes law and the courts interpret them -- The US Constitution." i hope with all of my bleeding heart that you are correct about this!!! suggestions made by some from the FAR, FAR right indicate that they are hoping (and predicting) that you are wrong... AND...thank you for sharing your view! i don't agree with most of it ...but i AM glad to live in a country where i can say i don't agree with somone else's view - - even if that someone else IS the president. and Canada DID seem like an appealing option to me briefly after the election (lovely place)...the degree to which i felt sadness, fear and anger was actually rather unexpected...and has only been exceeded in my lifetime by my post-9/11 feelings... BUT, sorry to be the bearer of bad news - not only will i not go quietly, i won't go at all..i'm staying here and doing what i can to advance "my" causes and beliefs... on a related but somewhat silly note - i saw the end of American President over the holiday weekend and was SHOCKED by how much the "president's" final speech (where he is responding to the press about his opponent waging a "character war") sounded like something the DNC might have benefitted from listening to prior to the campaign... enough of me... I agree that in the end it might be a good thing, but remember, we are forcibly imposing our beliefs and ideologies on another culture. That's never the correct thing to do, nor is it the correct way to do it. The war in Iraq may be a preemptive strike, but so was (some would argue) Pearl Harbor. "2. Bush will appoint Supreme Court Justices and federal judges who will interpret law rather than those who attempt to create laws which suit their personal sensibilities. Congress writes law and the courts interpret them -- The US Constitution." Couple things - First, strict construction of the Constitution would mean the end of substantive due process as it exists today. Yes, that would include abortion, but would also include things like contraception, privacy, and other rights of individuals. Second, while there are 'activist judges', you have to remember that the Supreme Court INTERPRETS the Constitution - people's interpretations are different, including Bush's. Bush's interpretation of the Constitution supports his agenda (surprise surprise!)!!! "3. The Bush administration increased federal funding for education by 50% (I know, I know, not fully funded, but still increased significantly. There is a war on so priorities had to be re-evaluated). The Administration increased funding for Aids in Africa by 3 times what the Clinton Administration had alloted." Aids in Africa? (honestly, I'm not familiar with this) But, just like everything Bush has done, shouldn't we worry about the problems in our country before giving money to others? Why are we spreading democracy and "Freedom" while we are limiting it here? "I would absolutely respect someone moving there for that reason." So, if I don't agree with what the government is doing I should leave? The majority may rule in the country, but the rights of individuals are protected by the Bill of Rights. George Bush has absolutely taken steps already to diminish my rights, and means to diminish them further. Oh, one more thing - Colorado wasn't red. It was most decidedly purple. - -Don in Denver ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #282 ***********************************
