In my opinion, this was one of those shows where everything just clicked. It was sold out (as was Saturday's show.) Joe's Pub is a fabulous venue. My one argument with them is their tendency to book back-to-back gigs on weekend nights. Richard was absolutely on, but we all had to scurry out after a fairly short set to make way for the next act. Eliza was brilliant - I had never heard of her before Falcon Ridge this year, but I was so impressed with the way she held her own during the Friday Night Song Swap that I was thrilled to see her in a more intimate setting. Richard joined her for the final two songs of her set, and they had some banter about how he is "shameless" in joining other musicians on stage - downright "promiscuous". Cute. His harmonies were spot-on and absolutely chilling. This was probably the shortest set that I've ever heard him play, but every single element was nigh perfect. Richard is in excellent vocal form these days (is he still not smoking, do we know? Doesn't sound as though he is.) The new guitar is beautiful. I thought that Rad really contributed to the songs he played on. I'm solidly in the prefer-solo-Richard camp, but for once I was downright tickled by Rad's enhancements. Richard's reaction to some of Rad's piano work on "Transit" was absolute high comedy. Richard did chat about how much he enjoyed playing for his hometown crowd - particularly after playing "Last Fare", when he mentioned how nice it was to play to a room where everyone understands what Amsterdam is, etc. He also made a point of thanking WFUV, without whom he "wouldn't have a career." Then he paused, considered that, and said something like "No, I'm not kidding. I really wouldn't." One thing that struck me was that he remembered the words to everything - there was one miniscule fumble during "You Stay Here", but otherwise it was smooth sailing. I didn't write the set list, but to the best of my memory it was: Mavis Fenario Big Muddy Cancion Sencilla You Stay Here Waiting For the Storm Arrowhead Reunion Hill Last Fare Transit (am I missing anything?) After the show I didn't stay to chat the way I normally do - I figured that in New York he has actual friends to spend time with, as opposed to zealous fans who trap him in long political conversations. I made my way to where he was hanging just long enough to deliver a little present. I'm an organizer for the New York City professional musicians' union, so I brought him a hat and tshirt (with "Keep the Music Live" on the back.) My big treat came when I approached him. Richard took one look and said, "I know you." and proceeded to rattle off some of the places outside of the city where I've seen him. I doubt it means that I'm getting an invite for Thanksgiving with the family, but it was nice to be recognized. All in all, a wonderful wonderful show. When's the next one? I hadn't discovered Richard yet when SNP came out. Does anyone know if he was playing Calling The Moon back then? << Yeah . . . in fact, I recall him doing it at the Turning Point in Piermont, NY, at a show in November of '99, at least a couple of months before SNP was released. It's one of my favorite non-RS-penned RS songs. Better than Dar's version, in my opinion. That must be off of "Somewhere Near Amsterdam". I heard he doesn't play that one. I was wondering what Richard would have said if Ronnie asked for "The Weather". I guess he would have said "I don't know that one". He did say "I'll do any song you want", but he quickly added "anything that I know". So Pat, what would you have requested? What about everyone else? I guess there are 2 ways to play this game. One is to assume that Richard would have literally played anything that you requested. The other is the realistic approach - there are some songs that he really doesn't want to play. Or who comes up with the line "law and decorum constraining nary a one"...maybe my personal favorite... My answer to the "what if" question would depend greatly on my mood. I'm feeling rather melancholy and sentimental this evening, alas. I'd probably ask for either "Blue Divide" or "I Saw My Youth Today". - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 2004 19:55:44 -0500 From: joe Subject: Re: [RS] If I were the man from the Netherlands I thought about this the other night after the show, what song would I like to hear from Richard? It's a song he doesn't do, it's called _All The Diamonds in the World_ by Bruce Cockburn. This comes about because back in the late 90's, Richard performed at this couples farm outside of Canton, Oh and after the show we sat around a camp fire singing songs. The name Bruce Cockburn came up and Richard said he really liked Bruce's music and he mentioned the song All the Diamonds. I know he tried to do some of it that night but didn't know all the words, but that song always sticks in my mind as a song I'd like to hear Richard perform. - Joe. (For instance, Richie Havens and Johnny Cash just missed the top 100 while some singer songwriter with only a few albums are ahead of them) but still quite an honor for Richard and was fun to listen to all week.
