If this were a newsletter, there would be somebody choosing articles, editing them, etc. However, this is a *mailing list* so people pretty much talk freely, unless the list admin requests otherwise. If you;re not the list admin, telling people what not to talk about is pretty irrelevant. > but it has gotten very old very quickly > listening to you talk about why you hate George > Bush, actually that you > hate him, not why.. I understand, as for me it has got very old very quickly listening to people on my favorite lists and communities whinge about how they're uncomfortable with all the George Bush bashing. I guess we figure we better live it up until the right-wing goons come to crack down on our "anti-American" activities. Richard Shindell." Maybe Jason is right. So, when Richard Shindell writes songs like Sparrows Point, Fishing, The Things That I have Seen, Money for Floods, Reunion Hill, Fenario, and Che Guevara T-shirt, and covers songs like Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Storms Around the Ocean - what do you think he's trying to tell us? Sigh. I agree, Jason, we should get back to talking about Richard, and save political talk for more appropriate venues. However, like I said in an earlier post, I think it's fair to say that pretty much ALL listservers are going to dominated by this discussion, for a short time. It's inevitable, and understandable. This is a highly-charged issue that affects all of us, and it is natural for discussion of it to spill over into unrelated, or tangentially related, areas. So cut us some slack, please. The discussion should die down fairly soon (as has already begun to happen), as everyone's frustrations are aired. If it offends you that much, simply stop reading the posts. There is one point that I disagree with, however. You say that "it has gotten very old very quickly listening to you talk about why you hate George Bush, actually that you hate him, not why..." That last part is blatantly incorrect. There have been plenty of "whys" and reasons listed here. You may not agree with those reasons--clearly, many people do not, staggering though that is to most of us--but you cannot deny their existence, or their plenitude. (You might say that we're "waist deep" in them.) - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Nov 2004 17:16:42 -0500 From: Norman Johnson Subject: [RS] Storms Around the Ocean ? Is that the AP Carter song? If it is, maybe someone can enligten me on this great tune. This song...also has a Scottish version called "Lass of Loch Royale". Kelly Joe Phelps recorded it on an EP a few years ago and heard it done by a Scottish folksinger once. The AP carter song has the same chorus and many fo the same verses except for a few. Does anyone know the story? I find the lineage of old songs fascinating. Norman Johnson wrote: Isabel mentioned Storms Around the Ocean as a Richard song. I have not heard or heard of this song. Not sure if that was the case here, but it's something he often does . . . RG ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #250 ***********************************
