Richard drove from Long Island, NY this morning. Jammin Java is a neat place for music, about 2 years in business, that holds about 200 or so, and it was a full house. Shindell did many of his new songs in the beginning of the show, from the new CD, which I don't have yet. I have a friend in Memphis, TN who wrote last night that the CD is as good as advertised! Richard explained a bit about how the song, "There Goes Mavis" mentions a bird flying away, as that came about since he had written many varations of the song and was stuck. His Daughter wanted to go get a Canary from the "Canary' store in their hometown in Argentina and that is where the idea came about to add the bird to the song. Of his older songs he did "Summer Wind, Cotton Dress", Arrowhead, Reunion Hill, Fishing, Last Fare of the Day (which is his song about 9-11) and Paul Simmon's song about America, as he told all to vote no matter who you vote for and of course, as he always does, "Are You Happy Now" as it was Halloween too! He did close with Transit. One of the new songs was written is a very desolate area of Argentina, on the ocean, in a garage! I knew Joan Baez did his Reunion Hill song, but I didn't know that she did Fishing, as Richard said last night. He told us that he is going to a family reunion in GA next weekend, one day for Democrats of the family and one day is for the Replubicans of the family. He said it will be an interesting weekend. He did say that one of his GA relatives, in a deep southern accent, very seriously, told him that Arrowhead is a good song, but next time, don't have them running away! He came back for the encore, and he said he was in a mood to do a country song, that he did very well, not sounding country at all, something about a marriage and a line that was repeated was something about the run of the roses. He explain that one of the new songs was in old English, with words in reverse order, and he got the last verse from a John Dunn, I think he said, from a book of verses that was a "few" years ago, while sitting on the can! He also tried to explain guitar tunning relating it to different types of religons, that he knew was going nowhere. He did a song by a J. P. Coomer, that he wants to record someday. He did explain how "Are You Happy Now' came about. He was not living in Baltimore, when it was written, as he was living in a highrise apartment in Manhatten, New York City and he was dating a daycare teacher. He said the teacher told all the kids to go to his apartment. Which they did and he forgot to get candy to give out! So he hid in the apartment! He wasn't mad at anyone in the song, like it sounds, so he added that last verse, to kind of show he wasn't! Anyway, I did ask him if Scott was here, since he lives in the Baltimore area, and Richard said no he wasn't! Richard tought he was somewhere on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Me, I rather see a Richard Shindell concert anyday, that go over that Bay Bridge to a desolate area! Now, I got my wife mad at me, probably, as she is from the Eastern Shore, but couldn't wait to leave that area when we married in 1982! O:)! So, she wont be too mad, as it is the land of Chicken Farms and Ocean City. Anyway, it was a great concert, as this is the 4th time we have seen Richard, as he doesn't play here as often, as say a Garnet Rogers from Canada, who I see about 4 times a year. I am from the eastern shore of Maryland, though I live in Boston now, and...well, yeah, okay, gotta agree with your assessment. :-) I wouldn't go so far as to call it "desolate", but it is definitely rural and off the beaten path. The land possesses great natural beauty, though, and it is an increasingly-popular vacation spot. Perhaps that's why Scott was there? My first time seeing Richard (and Lucy) in concert was in the town of Easton, which is on the eastern shore and is only fifteen minutes or so from where my family lives (which is still pretty much "home" to me). - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Nov 2004 10:00:06 -0500 From: "Isabel Frey" Subject: [RS] IMAC Show Here's the set list from Saturday's show at IMAC. Gene and I were hoping he would play Famous Blue Raincoat, and I'm pretty sure he was noodling a few chords of it when some idiot yelled out, "Play something happy!" Richard replied, "I don't do happy" and then started Transit. Ugh! So close yet so far..... Why do people think anyone is interested in what they shout out during shows? I have to admit thought, when he asked for requests I did yell out "The Weather," to no avail. Whey open he have another guitar with him- too much has$le to > travel with? anyone know? > mary Well, who knows? Traveling light? Sold the Lowden? Yes he did spend some time switching, only twice, but his new Taylor seems to really stay in tune. He did not tune much, if at at all, to keep it in tune. Great guitar playing all night. With Lincoln and Denny. Lincoln played an acoustic stand-up bass, that to me was muddy and overbearing at times. Here's the set list: Fenario Waist Deep in the Big Muddy There Goes Mavis - "If you9re struggling with your art, whether you9re a musician or a painter, or make quilts, throw in a canary. Works wonders. Unless you9re a cook." Cancion Sencilla Storms on the Ocean AP Carter Hazel9s House Che Gavara T-shirt Next Best Western Set 2 Arrowhead - subdued, but no lyric miscues Summer Wind Cotton Dress Reunion Hill - solo, slow awesome. What a song, what a performance! Tuning from "Pagan" DADGAD, and sometimes DADGF#G, to "Calvenist" standard "where you have to put your fingers down." He was pretty funny all night; the most animated I had seen him. Waiting for the Storm - solo, flurries of bluegrassesq guitar Fishing - with Denny & Lincoln, cool bass on this one with Denny using his bare hands on the toms snare and cymbal Are You Happy Now - a real crowd pleaser, especially around Halloween. He began the third verse with 3I smashed your pumpkin.2 Stopped, laughed and restarted with the correct verse. America, Paul Simon Wisteria - back to Pagan tuning for the requested Wisteria. Nice Last Fare of the Day Transit More thoughts to follow. I guess it helps that the entire new album is almost totally DADGAD.
