A Santa Barbara review from a not-yet-list-member: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I was in Santa Barbara to enjoy the great Richard Shindell, but I am not yet a member of the list. I just joined because I was going to comment and can't access that through the archives. I am a recent fan I suppose. Discovered him via Cry, Cry, Cry and got more interested because of discussions on the Dar list. Well, I almost wrote down all the songs, and I almost blew your secret on the t-shirt. He did say that it would be red. Did you catch that in San Diego? In SB he played: Reunion Hill Beyond the Iron Gate Fenario There Goes Mavis (whose full name is "Mavis Rara" ) (here insert perhaps one I didn't write down...was it Gray Green? Forgive my brain deadness, I was so excited about Mavis) Waist Deep in the Big Muddy Cancion Sencilla Are You Happy Now? America Transit Encore: A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress I requested Fishing but to no avail. Other than that we had good back and forth comments. It was such a small venue. Robbie Schaefer had us do a sing along to Message in a Bottle. We were comfortable and verbal. I couldn't believe my good luck to enjoy an excellent dinner and such amazing music. We were right in front on the side. Easy to meet him afterwards and purchase signed CDs for family. He also collected money for a group of children in Buenos Aires...a place to grow. He was generous and outgoing. Oh he had a new Taylor guitar. Tried it out for the first time. He sounded excellent...the guitar too. There was a band following him...we didn't stay. You may post this to the list if you so desire. What a treat for good folk music in CA. It was worth only getting 3 hours of sleep. Richard was in fine voice and mood - he was pretty funny. Even my blues-jazz loving husband enjoyed the show (which is something of a miracle). We had a little different song list than the San Diego show - here's the list that I remember and not in order (I was too mesmerized to write anything down): Hazel's House Next Best Western Fenario Che Guevara T-Shirt Cancion Sencilla Waist Deep in the Big Muddy Beyond the Iron Gate Are You Happy Now? Last Fare of the Day Reunion Hill Transit America (Paul Simon) Robbie Schaffer from Eddie from Ohio opened the show. At first I was disappointed that Richard wasn't going to be right out but Robbie was good! I had never heard any of his music and was pleasantly surprised. I'm looking forward to seeing them again on Wednesday at The Palm's in Winters. I could go on and on but then I'd sound like a lunatic instead of the normal 51 year old grandma that I am!!!!! Does anyone know who will play first? There appears to be some confusion about this. According to the physical tickets for the show, it is a "Richard only" concert. The ticket doesn't even mention Lucy's name, and neither does the Ticketmaster event description. Also, when Lucy's name is typed into Ticketmaster's search field, it does not turn up this concert. Yet Richard's schedule as of 8/8 lists the event as a cobill. Who knows? I'll be there either way... :) > I heard Willy Porter's version of this song from his live album on my commute > in this morning. Very nice version...reminded me what a great song it is. I also love Willy Porter's cover. It's pretty faithful to the original, but Willy personalizes it such that it sounds different. I'm a big fan of Willy Porter in general, and I'd recommend him to anyone who hasn't given him a listen. - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Sep 2004 13:00:57 -0400 From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: [RS] SSTW? Hmmm . . . wonder why Richard hasn't been doing "So Says the Whippoorwill" on the current tour, at least at any of the four shows so far (unless he did it at McCabe's on Saturday)? It's one of my favorites, and although the version on "Vuelta" is far from the definitive version, he's always done it great in concert. Ibd certainly love to see it return to the setlist, perhaps in place of "Are You Happy Now?", which, if I was Richard, I wouldn't play again unless some audience member held a gun to my head. Then I got an email from them stating Lucy Kaplansky was the special guest. I was just curious if Richard would be on early or late. Guess I will just have to go early. :) rfoxwell@wso.williams.edu wrote: There appears to be some confusion about this. According to the physical tickets for the show, it is a "Richard only" concert. Feedback on the Santa Monica show. BTW, regarding the Taylor guitar, I wonder what model he's playing. He only had the Lowden in San Diego, but I know that a friend of his (who works for Taylor, who are based here in SD) was at the show, so I'm guessing he hooked Richard up with a model for the rest of the west coast tour. This also answers my SSTW question. RG _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Another non-list member who thought you might want to hear about the McCabe's show on Saturday night. I saw your question about SSTW on the archives and wanted to let you know that he DID play it Saturday, in response to a request. It was the encore song. In short, it was awesome......the new guitar sounded great as did Richard's voice... I didn't write down the set list, but he played (in no particular order): Fenario Waist Deep Hazel's House Che Guevara T-Shirt Cancion Sencilla Mavis Last Fare of the Day Next Best Western Reunion Hill Summer Wind Wisteria You Stay Here (though only half of it, he forgot lots of words!) America Transit - ----------------- So Says the Whippoorwill The first 6 or so songs were from Vuelta, you can probably figure out which from the tunings (he didn't retune during these songs and I haven't learned any of them yet so I can't tell you!). I'm pretty sure the last 3 songs are in the correct order. Fenario was definitely up first. Summer Wind was definitely right before Wisteria and after Reunion Hill. Anyway, there you go. Can't wait to have Rich back in town! Saw no mention of him in the SoCal reviews, was he there? Richard announced another piece of merchandise he plans on selling in the near future: a Bradford Exchange commemorative plate of Hazel's House painted by the master of light himself, Thomas Kincaide! Unlike a t-shirt that fades, shrinks and tears, this item will appreciate in value as time passes.
