I'm having a hard time getting past the first couple of tracks, myself...Richard's guitar playing on "Fenario" is just perfect! On 'Somewhere Near Paterson' it was the guitar on "You Stay Here" that grabbed me, and here it's the very first track! The subtle harmonies of Lucy's on "Fenario" are excellent as well. I love this version of "Waist Deep" - someone mentioned there's a renewed interest in Pete Seeger's music lately? Here in the Hudson Valley I guess I'm more aware of his work than most. It's a rare open mike night indeed that you don't hear at least one of his tunes. I for one like the inclusion of it...especially (since those in NY are all far too aware of) it being an election year. I also have to say that the percussion work is really well done on that track. Kudos to the band, I think they've done an excellent job of being supportive without overbearing, just what RS need IMO. Now, I have to admit that the rest of Vuelta hasn't received as much attention from me thus far, but I can't say there's a single track that hasn't interested me in some way. Following the recent "Last Fare" thread, I have to say if I wasn't at least a little aware of its roots I might not see it as a 9-11 song, but the line about turning off the radio certainly fits that mood....What really grabbed me, though, was the mention of the 'dark meter', and the trip to Englewood. As any New Yorker knows, finding a cabbie who'll take you into Jersey in the first place can be a challenge - one who won't charge you for it would be nothing short of miraculous! For me, that is what embodied the immediately post 9-11 spirit here in the NY area, that is, a sense of cooperation and aid that New Yorkers so rarely exhibit to strangers (now, of course, with the RNC in town, NY is definitely back to its old, cynical, corrupt self). In late 2001 though, there was that spirit of brotherhood and togetherness in the air the weeks after 9-11, and it's plausible, and touching, to imagine a cabbie going out of his way to help out a few strangers in that setting. As always, I am amazed by Richard's ability to tell a story and completely draw me into it... I'll try to listen to the rest of the album over the long weekend and add some thoughts on the rest of it then; so far, it's everything I expected from RS - specifically, outstanding! Now if only I could only convince Richard to play at the Mansion in Middletown again... Cheers all, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Sep 2004 07:40:39 -0500 From: "kunigunda" Subject: Re: [RS] Gray/Green and Big Muddy Gee....I was getting ready to post that I especially LIKE the pipes...or pepsi bottles..or whatever makes that sound in "Gray Green". It's sort of like a soft cooing and goes along with the "noni noni noni" sound in the lullaby. I like how R has transformed a small, brief moment in time into an entire song! "Gray Green" is probably my favorite on the cd, and one I would most likely click repeat button for...at least for now! Of course I've always been a sucker for anything contemporary written in 3/4 time be it lullaby, ballad, waltz, etc. Speaking of distracting, there is a spot in 'Big Muddy' where it seems to me the drums are just offbeat and jog me out of my listening mode. It happens right before the verse beginning "All of a sudden...". I don't notice it again. Is anyone else jolted by this? Is that a pic of Richard in the back of a Buenos Aires taxi with a terrified look on his face? :-) The story he tells of the traffic and lack of "personal vehicular space" made me think of that. (In jest, of course.) For the heck of it, I tried playing it at home-same reaction, and twice more in the car! It must sound like another dog barking to him ( he's certainly no music critic!).
