They aren't lyrically or conceptually similar but the melodies remind me of one another. I am obsessed with Cancion Sencilla and have had that one on repeat more than any of the others. What can I say; I'm a Shindell junkie. Mavis is stuck in my head. I love the way RS repeats the line "There goes Mavis" and sings it a bit softer the second time, giving us the mental picture of the canary disappearing into the blue. "Mavis you can trust me, here's your big chance." Ahhh... a 7 year old giving a pet bird its freedom. The girl's voice is a little soft and tentative because in her heart, she really wants to keep that bird. But her generosity wins out and the onlookers, holding their breaths, are allowed into this noble moment. Ahhh... another Shindell painting... Thank you, RS, you are cool. Roxy, who didn't even get to the beach this summer, but hey. The music is here. :-) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2004 08:29:20 -0700 From: "Pam Pickering" Subject: [RS] Re: Vuelta It's great to know what everyone is talking about now! I got to listen to the entire CD on my way in to work this morning, a bad commute but made ever so much better listening to Richard's awesome guitar playing and songs. I can't wait to see him at the end of the month in Berkeley and Winters! Hey All: I have been to two big record stores in the northern New Jersey area, a Towers in Paramus and a Borders in Ramsey... and no Vuelta to be had. Both disappointing and annoying. I will keep trying. At this point, I would still rather buy it in a store than order it over the web ( which I clearly should have done). Guess it will show up eventually. One other thought: I have been surprised that my local station WFUV has not exactly jumped all over "Last Fare Of The Day". It is a very powerful song... and when I have seen Richard play it live it almost seemed to take people's breath away - and seemed the moment of most emotional intensity in an evening of emotional intense songs. WFUV broadcasts out of the Bronx, New York City. Many people hereabouts ( including me) lost people they knew on 9/11, so I still think eventually that this song will find a place in many people's hearts. I especially admire the way Richard managed to find a way to end the song with hope and grace... both literally and figuratively. Not an easy thing to do. I think it is probably the best song Richard has ever written. Anyway...the anniversary of 9/11 is the Saturday after next. Maybe we could all reach out via the phone or email to our local radio people who still play contemporary folk music and request that they play "Last Fare". Those of us who are lucky enough to have that kind of radio station still on our dial. I will send email to WFUV ( the Vin Scelsa show is on Saturday night, no webstream - blame Congress ) and the Jerry Tracy show on Saturday morning on WFDU ( which does webstream, _www.wfdu.fm_ (http://www.wfdu.fm) ). Pretty good chance I can get Jerry Tracy to play it. Mr. Scelsa is a man of mystery who generally listen to his own muse - but you never know. I am sure he likes Richard Shindell. He loves Dar. Maybe others can do the same. I would be interested in where you hope to hear the song ( the radio staion ) and whether or not you were successful. While were at it, wouldn't Richard make a great guest on "Prairie Home Companion"? Garrison Keillor's audience would probably just be knocked out by "Last Fare" - they are the sort of people who actually listen to lyrics. Just a thought... On Monday morning I diligently checked my p.o. box before embarking on work-related travel to southern California. Alas, Vuelta had not yet arrived and I knew I would be looking at another week before I could get back to the box to pick it up. In a moment of half desperation, half despair, I spotted a Borders music store from the highway, late at night, on my drive from San Luis Obispo to southern CA. A quick pit stop-- not imagining for a moment this particular store would carry this particular item-- and I spotted it there-- 3 shiny copies of Vuelta-- with Richard's small head and bust staring back at me in the distance through the taxi window. What to do? Do I wait another week? Or do I capture this very copy I hold in my very own hands this very moment? All I can say is... I certainly made the right decision :) Candace on the central coast (sometimes) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2004 17:18:37 -0400 From: Peter Booth Subject: Re: [RS] more Vuelta comments and questions > What does Richard mean by "I came here, package deal" in The Island?
