I think it's all just a part of the changing industry. There was a day when stations like WFUV and WXPN could break a lot of unknown artists. But then commercial radio got seized by Clear Channel and the likes, and suddenly there was no one to play Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Randy Newman, Steve Earle, etc (the more well known in the songwriter genre), so all of those major label artists turned to the WXPN's of the world and now most of them have so little room for the "smaller" independent artists. Sad indeed. There are still a few stations out there who still break artists like KCRW..Nic Harcourt is a good example of someone who will play what he likes and since he is somewhat of a taste maker, a lot of other DJs may follow suit if he really gets behind something. Someone who will get behind music they like...and don't have to abide by a playlist. Some of these stations still have great specialty programs where a dj can do his/her own thing and help introduce music that isn't necessarily getting a big push from a label, etc. Vin Scelsa's show Idiot's Delight would be a good example. I don't know have Satellite Radio. I had Sirius in a rental car once and it was fun, but on all the stations I heard or all the music I heard, I didn't come across music from anyone that wasn't really well known, so I don't know how much hope there is for that medium. hope everyone is enjoying their day... jc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2004 18:58:33 GMT From: "ptpowerlists@juno.com" Subject: [RS] Re: Canción Sencilla Keith wrote: >>Here is the translation that Richard posted on his website yesterday (8/24)<< Shortly after I send my translation to the list, I sent a note to Scott to see if I was even close. I wonder if he jogged Richard's memory about posting it. (Or perhaps Richard is lurking!) It's somewhat satisfying to see that many of the translations I intuited were spot on. On a few others, I opted to go with what was a more literal translation. I was on the fence with "Te quiero"... I'm not so familiar with its casual use, so I thought "I want you" would do the trick -- it surely can be just as romantic. If was a 50/50 shot, I guess... The interview I recorded today is supposed to air at 5:33 and 7:33 Friday morning but will be archived at: http://wkar.org/newsfeatures/page.php?content=results I believe that Melissa, the Morning Edition local who did the interview, will have included clips of "Waist Deep In The Big Muddy", "Cancion Sencilla" and "So Says The Whippoorwill". I told her that I would have liked her to include "Last Fare Of The Day", but that it wouldn't be fair to the listeners to deprive them of the whole story. I hope I did the CD (and Richard) justice. Just when I thought Melissa was going to play/record 'Whippoorwill' at the end of the interview, she got up from the console. That was it. So, I had to listen to the CD again upon my arrival home from the studio... what struck me about 'Whippoorwill' was the underlying "heartbeat" the drum brings to the song. It is of such a low frequency that when I play the CD on the stereo (as opposed to the computer), I feel it more than I hear it. !Asombroso! When I read these emails I tend to think that people should find something else to do with their time other than send emails about how much they like an album. (This sounds callous, but I'm really a nice guy. Just too busy for posting to email groups.) With that admission right up front, I've just GOT to tell SOMEONE how much I absolutely LOVE and I do mean LOVE this album. I got it in the mail this evening and I have listened to it straight through 5 times. I'm not the type to do this, but, like I said, this album is just so good. I LOVE THIS ALBUM! Someone who's connected please tell Richard that he has created an absolute masterpiece, and that's coming from a guy who doesn't usually waste other people's INBOX space with his own blather. Thank you so much for making this album. And I mean that. Thank you. Peter Booth Jericho, VT p.s. It came today (25th)!--admittedly, only from Maryland to Virginia. The package had 6 real stamps, nice human touch. Thanks to Scott and everybody. I was all set to play it, but reading "So Sang the Whipperwill" in the lovely booklet I started crying, and decided I'd wait until my wife could listen. We are fortunate folk. "4 days away from "Vuelta"! > Or just a few more (days) if you ordered it from Richard's website which I did. It sez it will be mailed on the 23rd. I can maybe hope for it on the 26-27th if the po isn't busy and media mail moves quickly. Just fyi, it's very easy and convenient to order from the website if you are a paypal user. I have to admit that I haven't devoted as much time to this (or any other) list in a long time, although I try to keep an eye on things (if only to satisfy my pathological paranoia) in the event Richard (or whomever) is making a radio appearance I'd like to catch. However much time, though, that I've spent on music-related lists, I can't say that I've *wasted* my time... Aside from the friendships that I've had the good fortune to develop throughout the years, this place has been where the sharing of our love for the music (as a whole) has also meant sharing the little things that makes *my* love for the music all the more enjoyable. There are insights that others bring here that might not have occurred to me (rare though that might be... heh!); there are nuances *I* might have brought to others' attention (attentions?) [e.g. one that recently occurred to me again while listening to "Wisteria" is the double meaning of "It's not my place"]. I suppose that there are many things I could be doing that someone else might consider more productive, but sharing a community is, in my book, a pretty damned productive thing. First, I haven't been able to find "Vuelta" in any of the local stores, and I haven't been able to order it because I'm in the process of moving. Second, and more to the point, I'm leaving the house I adore because I lost my job and can't keep up with the mortgage payments. The movers came today and packed everything into boxes; tomorrow they'll move us into the new rental place. And just now, I listened to "Wisteria." The emotions that man is able to capture and express in verse ("lyrics" seems like too weak a word) are moving beyond belief. From now on, "Wisteria" will always remind me of this house that I love and have to leave. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #171 ***********************************
