Hey you guys, Ron G. asked which of the 13 Shindell compositions on 'Courier' we preferred in their original studio versions, or the live version. My two cents: 1. Courier - live 2. Memory of You - live 3. Next Best Western - studio 4. Kenworth of my Dreams - live 5. Nora - studio 6. Arrowhead - live (the biggest difference of all the songs, to me) 7. Reunion Hill - well, I'll say the Courier version, though it's not really 'live.' It does reflect the way he was performing the song in his shows around the time Courier was recorded. 8. Fishing - live 9. Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress - studio 10. On a Sea of Fleur de Lis - studio 11. Ballad of Mary Magdalen - live 12. Are You Happy Now? - studio 13. Transit - toughest call. Slight edge to 'live' for John Putnam's intro Another live version that I like a lot (though Isabel doesn't like it at all) is 'May,' from the Fast Folk days. The extra verse (actually, the beginning of one verse and the end of the next were combined on the 'Reunion Hill' version, eliminating the end of one verse and the beginning of the next. Got all that?) and instrumentation really make the song come alive, and Richard's vocal, terrific on both versions, really crackles on the live cut. Now, about that live version of The Weather... (you didn't think I'd pass that up, did you?) Gene F. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Courier . . . too close to call . . . I love each for different reasons. 2. Memory of You . . . actually, as one of my least favorite RS songs, I can't pick. 3. Next Best Western . . . probably the live version, but not by much. 4. Kenworth of my Dreams . . . I prefer the countryish studio version. 5. Nora . . . indistinguishable. 6. Arrowhead . . . no question, the live version rocks my world, maybe my favorite song on the disc. 7. Reunion Hill . . . slow and mournful wins out over the Royal Canadian Marching Band Halftime Show studio version, although, as Gene said, it's not really true to his usual live version. And anyway, the definitive version of this song is the one he did with Tracy Grammer at the Knitting Factory in spring 2003. 8. Fishing . . . nothing special on "Blue Divide," but gut-wrenching on "Courier." 9. Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress . . . no real preference, so I'll take the zippier studio version. 10. On a Sea of Fleur de Lis . . . studio, because of the stunning fingerpicking. 11. Ballad of Mary Magdalene . . . studio, if only because of my preferred sequencing of verses #2 and #3. 12. Are You Happy Now? . . . live, I guess. 13. Transit . . . live. RG ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 2004 14:38:21 -0400 From: sdgold60@optonline.net Subject: [RS] taking a stab > 1. Arrowhead I adore this song LIVE... i love the band version..i love richard's picking > 7. Reunion Hill love Joan...singing reunion hill... love richard singing it live > 8. Fishing Live .....live live Hate JOan singing it... > 9. Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress Live with lucy > 10. On a Sea of Fleur de Lis Get up and go to the bathroom... > 11. Ballad of Mary Magdalen Lucy Lucy and Lucy.... richard live... > 12. Are You Happy Now? Live... played on FUV... in the morning often.... Baltirmore and car rhyme grates on me... cant hear it enough..... no dancing or moshing during AYHN.... > 13. Transit Overplayed as a last song... goes on too long.... needs a shorter closer...seems like filler... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 2004 14:44:49 -0400 From: Jim Colbert Subject: [RS] studio vs. courier, in a cage, no disqualification > 1. Courier Courier. Although (and this holds true of many of his songs) what I like best of all is hearing them live, solo. > 2. Memory of You FF live version is my favorite. Between studio and courier, I'll take courier just for the harmony. > 3. Next Best Western I look at the truckin trilogy as a whole, but even as separate cuts I prefer Courier. (I still prefer NBW live solo, actually. My favorite version is from a radio interview.) > 5. Nora Hmm, I haven't listened to the studio version in ages. I'll have to revisit this. (Which is also part of the fun of this!) My first reaction is studio, but I need to hear it again. Dang, why don't I have every disc I own at work?! > 6. Arrowhead Courier. Although honestly, some of the appeal to this to me is remembering seeing it live and watching the drummer... talk about earning your paycheck. > 7. Reunion Hill Courier. For me, the slower version is more poignant to the more textural studio version. (And either one beats the pants off of Joanie's version, but there's a discussion we don't need to relive.) But I don't want to imagine life without either one! > 8. Fishing Courier. I'm noticing a trend here! It honestly took me hearing this song live to really get me to appreciate the studio version beyond the lyrics. Frankly, that's true of my thoughts on Richard in general, going back years. I liked his stuff on FF, was less-enamored of SP when it first came out, but became mesmerized after seeing him live. > 9. Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress Tie to me. (I also like the octave mandolin or bazouki based original take on this a lot!) > 10. On a Sea of Fleur de Lis Hmmm. I think I prefer studio on this, but need to revisit. > 11. Ballad of Mary Magdalen Courier, but I think I like C3 version best. > 12. Are You Happy Now? Don't care. (Sorry! I know this is the song that brought a lot of folks in, but it's long since lost its appeal to me. It's fun to play though!) > 13. Transit > This would be a tie, but for that sort of pulsating sound effect on the studio one that sometimes annoys me a bit. So modest edge, Courier. Your mileage may vary. And I agree, a true solo live disc would be unbelievably cool... Brought back a nice Falcon Ridge memory... Several years ago, Greg Brown participated in the Friday Evening Song Swap. The theme was "Songs I Wish I'd Written." He did a three-song medley that began with Ring of Fire, in his best Johnny Cash voice. I swear, people came running down the hill convinced that Johnny Cash had shown up. - - eric ps - the other two songs in the medley, if I recall correctly, were Randy Newman's Wedding in Cherokee County and Jonathon Richman's When I Grow Up I Want to be a Tree. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 2004 15:49:26 -0500 From: "kunigunda" Subject: Re: [RS] Is it live, or is it... Since my first CD other than CCC was COURIER, I am partial to those takes. What a well done live album. When I eventually got the other CDs I was just slightly disappointed though I still enjoy listening to them from time to time...for a change. Memory of You - Courier version (but I could go either way). 3. Next Best Western - Reunion Hill version, there's just the slightest hesistation before "beast" in the "it's in the nature of the beast" line from the last verse that is on the RH version but not on the live one. 4. Kenworth of my Dreams - Courier version, it has Lucy! 5. Nora - Sparrows Point version, but this is a close call. I like the brief interlude right before the second verse better on the SP version. 6. Arrowhead - could go either way. 7. Reunion Hill - Courier version. 8. Fishing - Courier version. 9. Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress - Courier version. 10. On a Sea of Fleur de Lis - Sparrows Point version. 11. Ballad of Mary Magdalen - Courier version - but the Che Lives version with Dar on lead and Richard backing is the best. 12. Are You Happy Now? - could go either way, and frankly I skip this song a lot. 13. Transit - Courier version.
