B&N selling it 20% off at $14.38, Amazon shows it still at $17.98. You can listen to clips of ALL the tracks at B&N. They also list all the album credits. > I wonder if Richard will have any for sale at Falcon > Ridge? Also, any chance of a hidden track or bonus > cd, like with Courier? Just wondering! This is based on clips and a few full songs I've heard. The new songs, compared to previous cds, are....and I'm searching for the right adjectives here.....safer? lighter- less soulful or sad? And, correspondingly, Richard's voice seems softer and more controlled. I don't hear the roughness I heard in Courier. I'm not saying good or bad, it's just something I've noticed. Anyone else have any comments? Carrie in KC ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 2004 09:59:27 -0400 From: rfoxwell@wso.williams.edu Subject: Re: [RS] Early impressions... I > don't hear the roughness I heard in Courier. I'm not saying good or bad, > it's just something I've noticed. Anyone else have any comments? Indeed, I've been struggling to articulate my feelings about this. I heard "Last Fare" last night on WFUV, as well as listening to the clips of other songs provided by various sources, and I have to agree with Carrie (and use her same descriptors). "Last Fare" seemed lighter and safer, yes, and less intense and passionate. Richard's voice definitely seemed softer and "airier", if that makes sense. I must say that I prefer the rawer, more intense performances that I've heard... ...however, it definitely bears mentioning that this seems to be a natural difference between live performances and studio performances. With very few exceptions, I always prefer Richard's live versions of songs to the studio recording. In the past, I always attributed this to the belief that the live versions were later and more developed, and that they were the more "definitive" versions. (I got into the Shindell game late, just after Courier was released, and all of the live shows I've heard have featured post-studio versions...until now.) Now, though, I'm thinking that the difference is more intrinsic to the music; perhaps Richard--and other artists--just project different feeling and atmosphere when playing in different settings. It makes sense: live performances are always going to be more intimate and soulful, and when we are dealing with intimate and soulful songs like "Last Fare" and "Whippoorwill" (and "Fishing", and "Next Best Western", and "Transit", etc., etc.), well...it stands to reason that they would come off less powerfully on a studio recording. I'm definitely not complaining, and I definitely want to reserve anything resembling final judgement until I've spun the record for myself a few dozen times or so. (I wonder how "Mavis" will sound, given that it is already a very whimsical and laid-back song...) I just thought I'd chime in with my early impressions. I also agree with an earlier poster's thoughts about "Big Muddy": the live performances I've heard were all very driving and intense, very powerful, whereas the 90-second clip from the CD I've heard was much more easygoing and relaxed, and also objectively slower in tempo. - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 2004 06:56:45 -0700 (PDT) From: adam plunkett Subject: Re: [RS] The new cd I agree with your observation but I believe that is true of all of his studio work...and that is not a criticism, that is just the nature of studio albums. I have always thought two of his best studio tracls are "Wisteria" and "I Saw My Youth Today" because he really sounds like he means it and that is hard to do on a studio album I think. Our last Richard release was live where his voice - and the band being live, in the moment - are more rougher and passionate. That's the beauty of live shows and why I will attempt to make many Richard shows as I can!! What you said about live performance vs studio makes sense. I also got a rather late RS start, circa Cry Cry Cry, and although I have now acquired all the earlier albums, I listen to Courier the most. I guess that will be the closest I'm gonna ever come to a live performance...unless I can make it to Chi or Phl this fall.
