I am bummed that I will be out of town that weekend. That sounds like my kind of show. There are much, much worse places to live than San Diego. I did a 3 year stint there in the mid 80's and it was more fun than should be allowed by law (probably because much of it wasn't) and try to get back there every few years. I still have a bunch of friends out there, and of course, there's always the Taylor Guitars Factory Tour. There may not be many folk references, but maybe you can find that little cafe that Mr. Springsteen referenced many years ago, where they play guitars all night and all day. I'm sure you'll be able to hear them in the back room strummin. Will you be taking up residence at Java Joe's? Be safe, be well and be ready for an incredibly fun life in what the SD residents delight in calling "America's Finest City". First of all, let me preface this by saying that I'm extremely uncomfortable using the list for a totally self-serving purpose -- as well as for cross-posting this message on another list or two -- but I'm hoping that the circumstances will allow me this one exception. As several of you who know me are aware, I will soon be packing up and leaving New Jersey -- the land of shopping malls, the merge from the Turnpike, Hazel's house, Paterson, Englewood ("Just take it slow," was all she said) and birthplace of one Richard Shindell -- for San Diego (the land of mountains, desert, surfing, terrible bagels, Petco Park, over-the-counter drugs just a short drive away in Tijuana, and not even one good folk song from which to make a clever reference). I'm making the move for both personal and professional reasons, but don't cry for me, Argentina; there are worse places I could be going, I reckon (although it's been tough listening to "Wisteria" recently). Anyway, I was thinking that a nice way to say goodbye to my list pals in the NJ/NY area would be to offer up one last RG musical performance, honoring the songwriters we all love (mostly Richard and Dave & Tracy, but I guarantee at least one song each by Mark Erelli, Lucy Kaplansky, Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch, Dar Williams, Darryl Purpose, Lynn Miles, Lori McKenna, and Julie Miller. And just to show that Great Mimes Think Alike, our good buddies Gene and Isabel Frey were thinking the same thing, and have kindly offered up their home for a house concert, where I had the great pleasure of opening for We're About 9 back in February. We're calling it the "RG 'Farewell to East Coast' East Coast Farewell Tour" show. Date: Saturday, June 26 Time: 2pm Address: 16 Court Street, Merrick, NY 11566 Directions: http://members.aol.com/rongrittz/directions.htm Please RSVP to Gene and Isabel at courthouseconcerts@yahoo.com, and I would be honored to see some of you there. Your pal, RG I'm from New Jersey I don't expect too much If the world ended today I would adjust -- John Gorka - ------------------------------ [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type image/gif which had a name of IMSTP.gif] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Jun 2004 13:39:21 -0400 From: B Gallagher Subject: [RS] San Diego Ron Gee > You are wrong wrong wrong, Wron. According to a June 1st update to Richard's website, the new album is indeed named "Vuelta", and it is slated for release on August 24th. It will contain the following songs, in the following order: 1. Fenario 2. Waist Deep in the Big Muddy 3. The Island (never heard it!) 4. Hazel's House 5. Che Guevara T-Shirt 6. Cancion Sencilla 7. There Goes Mavis 8. So Says the Whippoorwill 9. The Last Fare of the Day 10. Gray Green For more details, and for various relevant definitions of the word "vuelta", check out the News section of RS's site (www.richardshindell.com). The news section seems to be in flux, with the main site linking to alternate pages that list varying titles for the poem written under the 6-1-04 update, but the song list and relevant details seem to remain constant. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jun 2004 13:55:49 -0700 From: "Sandra J. I was hoping the next album would feature "Before You Go" and his cover of "America," but it will be great to hear the new songs. Interesting. I won't lose any sleep over "Before You Go" not being there. It's already available on the "Wonderland" compilation, and frankly, it's never done much for me. I had always thought that either "Whippoorwill" or "Last Fare" would be the closer, but "Gray Green," being more-or-less a lullaby, works fine. I'm really surprised about "Big Muddy" being the second cut. With it having been about 7hbz (hundred billion zillion) years since Richard's last studio CD, I'm not sure I would have put a cover that far front in the running order. Not that anyone but me is going to care, but here's what my running order would have been: 1. Fenario 2. Che Guevara T-Shirt 3. Cancion Sencilla 4. The Island 5. There Goes Mavis 6. The Last Fare of the Day 7. Hazel's House 8. Gray Green 9. Waist Deep in the Big Muddy 10. So Says the Whippoorwill Of course, I guess that's why god invented the Program button on CD players. ;-) RG ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jun 2004 17:40:02 -0700 (PDT) From: adam plunkett Subject: Re: [RS] "Vuelta" running order. A few words on the track listing: "Before You Go"'s version on "Wonderland" is perfect in my opinion...no need for another version. On the track lists, Ron, keep in mind we do not know the sound of each song on album, only from live performances. It's got to flow...can't just be a bunch of songs. Also, the reason for covering of "Big Muddy" could be political(which is great). And with that in mind, to make the statement, he might have wanted the track to be showcased. Let's hear the album first. :) Adam - --- Rongrittz@aol.com wrote: > Interesting. I won't lose any sleep over "Before > You Go" not being there.
