For awhile it was too quiet here. I'm so excited after reading all the comments about RS performing....and the upcoming new release, I've vowed to see Richard this year, even if it means buying a ticket and a hotel room. Hopefully all of that won't be necessary but I'm getting prepared. Waiting for Richard.....Carrie in KC. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2004 10:18:48 -0500 From: "Kristen Myshrall" Subject: [RS] Peekskill show last night Hi everyone, Sorry for the crosspost but I figured it would save time :) Last nights show in Peekskill with Lucy and Richard was, to use Lucy's words "as close to perfect as it gets". It was an amazing show, both were in rare form. Lucy was rocking and Richard was obviously in a great mood and sounded amazing. And am I allowed to say...well hey Lucy said it first!...that he looked amazing!!! He looked rested and happy and well...just awesome! It was in a GORGEOUS theater that is being renovated to it's original state and it was absolutely beautiful and the sound was fantastic! It was completely sold out (~1000 seats) and the audience was so obviously into both artists. It was great so see Benay, Donna, and others and to finally meet Donald from Scottland (hmmm I guess he wins now for traveling the farthest to see a show :)) Lucy had Duke Levine with her and did... No Place To Fall (Townes Van Zandt) Written on the Back of His Hand Guilty as Sin Love Song New York The Red Thread I Had Something (with Richard) Ten Year Night (with Richard) Brooklyn Train Line In The Sand I'm Lookin Through You (she totally rocked out on this one!) This Is Home Land of the Living By Way of Sorrow (with Richard) after a short intermission Richard came out (still looking damn good may I add ;)) and did There Goes Mavis (I just love the beat on this one) Che Guevara T-shirt Cancion Sencilla (complete with a nice translation and a similar chat like the other night about how mushy it is...i still love it...makes a lot of us girls swoon to hear him sing in spanish :)) Fenario (which is definitely growing on me) Waist Deep in the Big Muddy (i am SOOO glad he is recording this) Hazel's House (different for a Richard song...i'll have to hear it again to think about it more) Mary Magdalene (with Lucy) Are You Happy Now (with Lucy) Last Fare of the Day (with Lucy...oh my god...it sounded amazing with the two of them doing this together...i had chills through most of the song) Transit Encores (done together) The Kid (Lucy on lead) Saint Dolores (Richard on lead) All in all a fantastic show! We chatted a bit with both (and i managed to trip Richard going up the aisle, I swear i wasn't trying to kill him!). Gave Lucy her Half the Sky certificates (which i scanned and they will be online this week for everyone to see the adorable kids we sponsored in her name) which of course made her cry. She was very excited and didn't believe that she got to keep the pictures and everything and also about how she would get to show Molly them some day when she gets older and can understand. An uneventful drive home and a good night sleep...can't wait for my next show!! - -Kristen _________________________________________________________________ Find a broadband plan that fits. Could it have been "Mojito?" The main ingredients are rum, water (or club soda), sugar, and ample mint leaves (crushed). Quite tasty and the proposed name seemingly sounds close. Heh heh...no, it's not a mojito. That is an alcoholic beverage, very minty and good, that is a favorite club drink in many places that I've been. Mmm, mojitos. No, this was something else, something like an herbal drink that--according to Richard--many in South America carry around in little canteens strapped under their arms, with a metallic straw inserted. I gathered from Richard's rather circumspect way of describing the mixture that it is a borderline narcotic, something that is maybe on the shady side of legal, addictive and kind of like weakened marijuana in a liquid form. (Richard's description was supplemented by further information from my friend who is familiar with it, whom I mentioned earlier.) There was a child in the audience at the Clark Art Institute show, and so Richard made underhand references to the drink, commenting that it reminded him a great deal of a "certain herbal treat he was well acquainted with in high school", involving crushed leaves and pouches and storing in the refrigerator. It was hilarious, the crowd loved it. Anyway, the drink definitely had "Mata" in it (phonetically spelled), and it definitely isn't the alcoholic mojito. Which is a fine drink in its own right, if I may say so again. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2004 13:11:04 -0500 From: rfoxwell@wso.williams.edu Subject: Re: [RS] Peekskill show last night Quoting Kristen Myshrall : > Last Fare of the Day (with Lucy...oh my god...it sounded amazing with the > two of them doing this together...i had chills through most of the song) Last Fare of the Day with Lucy?!? Wow! That must have been tremendous. I'd love to hear that, I can only imagine how Lucy's vocals must have added to the song. I'm almost shivering, imagining Lucy singing harmony during the refrain. "And turn it does, I pull away / I know it well, this old ballet..." All I can say is I was held spell bound for 3 hours by Lucy and Richard's performances last night. the Paramount is a great venue (an art deco 1000 seat theater) > While I was always a fan of Lucy's - I love her even more. Her voice is pure honey and her songs brought tears to my eyes One particularly funny thing happened, although I'm sure it wasn't that funny for her. She forgot the opening line to one of her songs off the red thread. She shared this with the audience and then asked if anyone had a copy of the Cd with them. So a brave woman from Scotland came up to the stage and fed her the line in a nice brogue. It just added to Lucy's fragile and very human performance. Before the performance my friend spotted Richard eating with his bass player across the street from the Paramount. ( oh my god her really eats food, he's human not a genius apparition like I thought) His back was turned to me, but it was definitely him. Thank god, I reigned in my rabid,Richard mania and let him eat in peace. I thought of going back stage, but I just would have been a babbling idiot. I just haven't felt this way about a musician since my prepubescent Beatle's phase. What more can I say... I'm enraptured - I'm sure you all understand. > Richard was self effacing, funny and seemed encouraged by the audience's very warm reception to his new body of work. He did many of the songs that have been mentioned on the site previously. I especially loved his opening song Mavis( I think that's what it's called) He told a very sweet story about how he was having difficulty finishing the song, when his daughter came into his office and reminded him that they had a date to go buy a canary-which they did. He came back and then added a verse about a canary and the song was complete. He advised any aspiring songwriters in the audience to just add a canary to their songs if they get stuck. I wish he had played a few more of the old ones. I think he only did around 3-4. No Arrowhead but maybe I'll hear it at the Joe's pub gig this week. all in all, a very memorable evening. > thanks for letting me ramble and share my joy. mary ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #61 **********************************
