But I wonder if venues such as IMAC would include a house concert in their contracts as a competing local venue necessarily. It's an interesting point. Given how new an idea house concerts are, my guess is they aren't. The majority, if not all house concerts, are non-profit and all receipts go to the artists. Perhaps someone should test this one day. Take my area for example. I am blessed to live in Massachusetts. People go to folk music and we have many venues. There is anywhere from 5-10 venues in Boston/Cambridge (and that number is on the conserrvative side). I would say that if you go 30 miles south, there is at least 10 more. If you 30 miles north, you will find 10 more, etc. Then, in Western Mass., there is a huge scene in Northampton. Granted, that is over 100 miles away. I know that performers play multiple venues in this area. With all that said, performers tend to go to the same places. I can understand why they would make that agreement, but it is too bad as it is nice to have multiple places to see someone around here. Cafe Lena is a small venue, fitting (last time I was there) less than a hundred, and closer to 50. And while it's a fantastic place to see a show, it would seem to belie the idea that he's only playing rooms that are of a larger size. That said, if you're in the Albany/Saratoga/Glens Falls area, call right now to make your reservation. It's a great place with a great history. I've been thinking about the Cafe this week, and Lena Spencer, the late owner, who was good friends with the now late Spalding Gray. jeff. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Mar 2004 16:11:18 -0500 From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Saratoga Springs . . . >> And while it's a fantastic place to see a show, it would seem to belie the idea that he's only playing rooms that are of a larger size. << Yeah, I'm curious about the urban legend that Richard's only playing larger venues nowadays. I believe the Spring tour is solo, and there seems to be a fair number of smaller venues on the schedule: Cafe Lena, Club Helsinki, Four Corners, Passim, Joe's Pub. Seems like, for the most part, it's a pretty straightforward "club" tour, no? Seems like, for the most part, it's a pretty > straightforward "club" tour, no? Richard's Williamstown gig later this month supports the club tour idea. You can't get much farther away from civilization than Williamstown; it's a tiny college town tucked away in the Berkshires, out in the middle of nowhere. (I should know, I went to school there.) I did a triple-take when I saw that Richard would be performing there; I'm still rather suspicious, despite having confirmed it with the venue (which is an art gallery, of all places, not even a musical venue!). Anyway, that gig pretty much blows away the "large venue only" theory. There's no way that Richard would be coming to Williamstown if that were the case. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #44 **********************************
