So, how about a different five? Richard has proved just how well he can cover other people's songs. He seems to be able to get to their very essence. He also has outstanding taste. So, what other songs do you think he could add to his covers collection? Here's five that spring to mind. Peppers and Tomatoes (Ralph McTell) - Simply one of the greatest songs ever written. The studio version suffers a tad from over production, but the stripped down live version is stunning. Song of the Candle (Stan Rogers) - So many wonderful songs to choose from the Rogers catalogue. Beeswing (Richard Thompson) - How can a world in which Richard Thompson is not a global superstar be described as just? More great songs than I can count, though this is possibly my personal favourite. Now Touch The Air Softly (Peter Mayer) - This is a reasonably new one on me. Lovely words that would undoubtedly benefit from Richard's vocal sensitivity. Stitch In Time (Mike Waterson) - A witty song about wife-beating?? Check out Christy Moore's brilliant version. Finally, for what it's worth, my personal RS top five: Reunion Hill; I Saw My Youth Today (why is this not more popular?); Wisteria; Are You Happy Now?; Nora. When RT came to Lawrence, KS we went to see him, but the concert was so loud I spent a lot of time in the lobby. Later my husband was telling me about a song I missed, and how it almost brought tears to his eyes because the protagonist reminded him of me, or their love story reminded him of us, or something like that. (Now, if you've heard the song, you know this is not exactly a compliment, but...) My sister told me the same thing--she was going to buy me the album just so I'd have "Beeswing." It's an amazing song. Thompson's "Beeswing" and Rogers' "Song of the Candle" (FolkScene series has a great live versiom of this song) are two of my favorite songs. And yes, where is the love for "I Saw My Youth Today"? The song gets to me everytime I hear it. I know Richard doesn't play it live - I asked him once and he said it doesn't fit well into sets - but I think it is one of his best songwriting moments.
